Last week I posted questions regarding applying for the Non-Immigrant "O" visa.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=50875

In the block: PURPOSE OF VISIT, I wrote, "Visiting friends, studying culture."

This morning I received a call from the consulate in Houston, Texas. The woman on the phone asked "is the school going to fax us the paper?" I responded that there was no school. I told her that when I submitted the visa form, I had written "studying culture" as that was the purpose that best suited my situation. I told her that I was not actually attending a school per se, just immersing myself in the Thai culture by living there.

She responded that the only visa I qualified for was for (3) 60-day tourist visas. She added that I had sent too much money for those. I asked her what my options were. She said, "I can give you 5 tousist visas."

So now I have 5 tourist visas. :-(

Interesting that you have posted this on same day as a Post from someone in UK also concerned at being refused an O visa. It demonstrates that what you read here about the ease with which consulates issue O visas should be taken with a big pinch of salt.

You did yourself a disservice by saying studying culture. No-one in your previous thread suggested you give that as a reason. You were doomed to failure.

A little misleading but factually correct. You meet the requirements you get the visa. You did not meet the requirements. Whether the requirements are always simple is arguable but to consular saff they probably are.

Just re-read the previous post...........did say at the time you didnt qualify for a Non Imm O and the only chance you had was going for a "family and friends " approach.

The problem you/ll most likely have now is the fact that you/ll appear to have a tourist with 5 entries on it from what you've said but the visa itself will only have a 6 month validity in which to use all 5 entries.........therefore a triple would of been ample, this would of give you a total of almost 9 months in Thailand.

It wasn't neccessary to obtain the 4th and 5th entry as unless you plan to travel in and out of Thailand during the 6 month validity period of the visa these last 2 entries are effectively money wasted. :o

Manofhull.......the other poster you are referring to, i've just spoke to him on the phone and the reason he was rejected was that he chose to apply to a different Consulate than the one i advised him to......(i think we all know which Consulate i/m referring to).

The advice given to him was sound.

I would agree with you that this poster putting "studying culture" will not of helped his cause but rather raised further questions from the Consulate concerned.

Points well made. Why, why, why did I use "study culture?" A lesson learned.

And yes, I know that 3 visas would suffice. But my only option would have been to send them a new money order for $75 and (hope) they return my one for $125. And then hope again that I could redeem that money order with the ROYAL THAI CONSULATE's name printed on the front of it.

In his previous thread titled "O visa...." you gave no advice.

The reason he was rejected is he did not meet the consulates requirements for an O visa. Simple really.

The point seems to be that the Consulates view on what is acceptable has recently changed. I expect that there is a move to march to the same drummer and previous experience at such and such a Consulate may no longer be valid.
