ARMY CHIEF: THERE WILL BE NO COUP D'ETAT

Army Chief General Sondhi Bunyaratglin (สนธิ บุญยรัตกลิน) insisted that there will be no coup-d'etat under his leadership, requesting that the people and the business sector be more confident in the political situation. Army Chief Sondhi commented on the report that some groups of people are attempting to organize a coup-de-tat that there will be no such action during his term as head of the Army.

He requested that the people and businesspeople not to be worried about political situation, adding that the country now needs stability in economic, social, political and military affairs.

Meanwhile, spokesperson of the Army Colonel Akara Tiproj (อัคร ทิพโรจน์) said that the report was leaked by some groups of ill-intentioned people who hope for business interests. He said the Army can confirm that no such move is happening, because the Army will remain under democratic system.

He added that the army chief is now aiming to make all military units develop more unity in their work and perform their best for the benefits of the nation. He said that he was not worried about the news report.

Well, earlier this week in the Thai news an air force general or someone like that put his jack-boot in his mouth in a "patriotic" statement on the whole Sondhi topic, according to my wife. So the military might also be trying to defuse the negative public impression that was caused?

Is this statement like the president, coach, and or players of a sporting team saying they have full confidence in the coach, captain, lead player. It is usually the kiss of death.

The same is seen in politics, and board rooms across the world.

Time to find the safest place away from the tanks, just incase you need a bolt hole.

I would think that mr 't' would have promoted too many of his supporters into the key positions by now to have to worry about a coup - maybe they are more talking popular uprising - though I see no real indications of this yet either.

There will be no coup d'etat, confirms Armed Forces chief

BANGKOK: -- There will never be another coup d'etat in Thailand, Armed Forces Chief Gen. Ruengroj Mahasaranond confirmed here on Monday.

Responding to journalists over continuing rumours on a new coup, the supreme commander affirmed that the Thai military now has no idea of staging any coup d'etat.

"The rumours are definitely groundless, the Thai military in this modern age has no idea about any coup," he told journalists before attending a National Security Council (NSC) meeting.

Gen. Ruengroj was asked for his comments on a reported claim by an academic recently that some military officers had sought for his advice on how to stage a new coup, citing their dissatisfaction with the government's performance.

"Even if any military officers wanted to stage a coup, they would never have sought for advice from anyone outside their group, particularly any academic. The reported claim sounded unrealistic," said the armed forces chief.

Earlier Army Chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin also denied the rumours.

"A coup d'etat causes a huge damage to the nation; so, I can say as long as I am still in office, there will never be any coup d'etat," the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army vowed.

Gen. Sonthi's remarks were in response to a previous claim by a government source that a group of military officers was attempting to stage a coup.

"You media please tell the general public, traders and business persons that there's nothing to be worried about--there will never be a coup d'etat as feared," Gen. Sonthi stressed.

"Our nation must be strong and stable through political, economic, social and military strength. A coup d'etat will destroy the goal; and so, it will never be allowed to take place again," the army chief affirmed.

There has always been a delicate balance struck with the Military.

Thaksin systematicly has tried to remove the power of the generals for many valid reasons.

Their is only one person who can tip the balance with populace support.

THE PRIVY COUNCIL HAS URGED ALL PARTIES TO STOP REFERRING TO THE ROYAL FAMILY IN THEIR POLITICAL CONFLICTS

The privy council has urged all parties to stop referring to the Royal family in their political disputes. Privy councilor General Surayut Julanon (สุรยุทธ์ จุลานนท์) requested that all parties stop drawing the Royal family to political conflicts, while refusing to comment on reports on coup-de-tat as he is not in the position to comment on political matters. He added that he is not involved and disagrees with the coup-de-tat, adding that his alleged involvement is aimed at creating confusion.

General Surayud said that President of the Privy council, General Prem Tinsulanon (เปรม ติณสูลานนท์) also expressed concerns regarding the reference to the Royal Family, but he never spoke of the coup or the army.

ARMY CHIEF SONTHI REITERATES THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY COUP D’ETAT

In reaction to the coup d'etat rumour, Army Chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratkalin (สนธิ บุญยรัตกลิน ) said it was groundless. He also said rumours such as the coup should be ceased as it may cause confusion in the society.

He has expressed his confidence that the Thai Army is well disciplined as they have an oath to protect the Royal Family and the basic rights of the Thai people.

The Army chief added that he will not meet with high-ranking officers to seek for solutions since many of them have already advised him.

Thai military plans $6.6b upgrade

BANGKOK: The Thai military, which last fought a war in 1987 against tiny neighbour Laos, wants to spend US$6.6 billion on upgrades over the next nine years, Defence Minister Thammarak Isarangura said yesterday.

The first stage of the three-part planes, ships and tanks spending spree would focus on repairing and replenishing weapons, improving civilian rescue operations and economic development, Thammarak told a radio show.

...The Thai military, which last fought a war in 1987 then mobilised troops, warships and aircraft when the embassy was burnt down in Phnom Penh; engaged in constant low-level lobbing of grenades across the Burmese border; sent forces to two wars in Iraq and is currently engaged in an insurrection in three provinces (but of course is firmly opposed to needless violence because we're Buddhist...)
