Hi, I'm a Candian father living in Thailand married to a Thai wife. We have a 3 month old baby son who was born in Thailand. I want to get his Canadian citizenship as soon as possible since i heard the process is long and i plan on taking him back to Winnipeg for a visit later this year or early next. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the process and could enlighten me a bit. The info on the embassy website is straight forward enough but i'd like to know first hand how things went. One problem i noticed is that you need proof of identification ( two documents ). What can we use for our son? It also stated we need one piece of identification with a picture. Not sure what we could use for a baby.

Anyways, any feedback would be appreciated.

Apply for a Thai passport for the child. Cost is 1,000 baht and you have it in about 4 days. For 35 baht they send it to your home. That will take care of the picture ID requirement.

You will need the Thai passport anyway for leaving Thailand. (Your child leaves and re-enters Thailand on the Thai paspsort and enters and leaves Canada on the Canadian passport. At checkin with the airline you show both passports, to confirm no visa is needed).

Call the embassy - if I recall correctly, passport comes after he is given the other stuff. There are forms you can download.

I am going through the same thing with the same question. Also I understand you can not apply for a passport until you have the citizenship paper.

Applying for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate for a Child Born Abroad to a Canadian Parent

Children born abroad to a Canadian parent on or after February 15, 1977 must submit the following to complete the application: (please also see the section on Retention below)

• Fully completed form CIT 0006.
  
• Child's original birth certificate listing the names of the child's parents (issued by government authorities in the country of birth) and a certified translation if the certificate is not in English or French. The Embassy can provide a list of translation bureaus.
  
• 3 photos which conform to the published photograph specifications.
  
• Proof that one of the parents was a Canadian citizen at the time of the child's birth. i.e. Canadian parent's original birth certificate or citizenship certificate. If the parent was born in Quebec, the Passport Office only accepts documents issued by Le Directeur de L'état Civil (Registrar of Civil Status of the Province of Quebec) from January 1, 1994 onward as proof of identity.
  
• Parent's original marriage certificate and a certified translation if not in English or French.
  
• Both parents' passports.
  
• Fee of CDN $75.00. This fee may be paid in Thai baht or U.S. dollars. Please check consular staff for current rates of exchange.

good luck getting it sorted if you wish to travel later this year, it takes ages, especailly if the child is over three.

once the child is over 3, they will not issue a passport until citizenship is cleared up and that takes at least 6 months

ON hte canadian side, it took about one year to get her canadian citizenship.

Then yuo can get her ht eCanadain Passport.

If you go on the Canadian immigration site, it tells the wait times to onbtain Canadain Citizenship.

It is almost two years now. I knoe because my wife jsut applied.

It is a very long process.

I am hoping to get my son Canadian citizenship status. I am Canadian living in Thailand, and can provide

all required documents, except the one below. My son is not yet 3, and does not have any ID. The ID required from the parent applying and not from the child except child's birth certificate with Enlish translation.

Could you also please let me know if the correct form is CIT 0001 or CIT 0006? CIT 0001 is correct form.
