Nalinee to address US blacklist issue

The Nation on Sunday

Newly appointed PM's Office Minister Nalinee Thavisin will today hold a press conference to clarify her position regarding her inclusion on a United States blacklist.

Nalinee's appointment to the second Yingluck Cabinet has been severely criticised because she is on the US Treasury's blacklist due to her business dealings with associates of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

The press conference is due to take place at the headquarters of the Pheu Thai Party at 2pm.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who reshuffled her Cabinet with a total of 16 portfolio changes, yesterday refused to comment when asked if Nalinee would be removed from her post before the new Cabinet is sworn in.

The opposition Democrat Party has repeatedly asked Yingluck to find someone else for the PM's Office post, saying Nalinee's appointment would hurt the country's image and discourage US companies from doing business with Thailand.

Supporters of Nalinee say her appointment is completely legitimate under Thai law. Meechai Ruchupan, a former president of the Senate, said that so long as Nalinee's appointment squares with Thai law, her inclusion on the US Treasury blacklist is not a major concern.

He said Thailand should not follow the US, because its policies serve the US' own interests.

Earlier, some Pheu Thai MPs voiced concern over the issue and suggested that Nalinee relinquish her new Cabinet post.

It would seem from the above quote that there is some concern as to the reputation that this appointee has.

When one views the track record of the appointee and the contacts and trade services rendered to the Mugabe regime one is tempted to ask.

"Was there, is there a political reward agenda in place put there by someone who has interests in Zimbabwe and the P.T.P. ?

Sounds to me like she is totally qualified judging from the other cronies in Yingluck's cabinet. Morals or ethics do not enter into the picture. Only who you are related to or who you know.

Goodie Goodie first we get a leader who has placed himself in exile so he wont have to go to jail for a crime he has been convicted of now we are lookig for the U. S. approval of our ministers even though it has nothing to do with them.

Interesting times we live in. Kinda like living in the Keystone Cops.

being Black listed and or on the SDN list is certainly a concern. this new minister appointee will probably be unable to

secure any traveling visa's especially for the western countries and countries which honor the list.

Pheu Thai urges public to give Nalinee a chance to work

BANGKOK, 22 January 2012 (NNT) – A spokesperson to the Pheu Thai Party has asked the opposition to refrain from taking political advantage of an appointment of Mrs. Nalinee Taveesin.

Mr. Prompong Nopparit, Pheu Thai Party spokesman, held a press conference concerning a controversial appointment of Mrs. Nalinee as new Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office. He said the legal team of the Pheu Thai Party has reviewed her credentials and qualifications before proceeding with the move. He then urged the opposition parties and the Democrat not to be manipulative and attempt to use this issue to discredit Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Mr. Prompong has requested the public to give Mrs. Nalinee an opportunity for her to do the job for some time, saying Pheu Thai Party is open for either the filing of a no-confidence motion or non-governmental organization’s scrutiny against Mrs. Nalinee.

However, Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has suggested Mrs. Nalinee give up the position before an oath taking ceremony of the new ministers takes place, reasoning it could affect the government and the country’s image.

Mrs. Nalinee Taveesin, who has recently been appointed as PM’s Office Minister, is on a US Department of Treasury blacklist. She is barred from financial dealings with US citizens.

Pheu Thai denies Nalinee pressured to quit

BANGKOK, Jan 22 - The ruling Pheu Thai Party's spokesperson denied on Sunday reports that some party members pressured a new cabinet appointee to relinquish her post following criticism that her name was on a US government blacklist for alleged business ties with Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe.

Mr Prompong Nopparit said Ms Nalinee was scheduled to hold a news conference to clarify the matter at 2pm today.

"I don't want either Mr Abhisit Vejjajiva, opposition party leader nor Pheu Thai party members to cast a bad light on [Ms Nalinee] in their criticisms and also to avoid implicating the prime minister," the party spokesperson said.

"Former Senate speaker Meechai Ruchupan was right with his constructive comments that the appointment of Ms Nalinee was not against the country's constitution," Mr Prompong said, adding that Ms Nalinee should be given an opportunity to prove herself first, and if any problems arose then a censure motion could be filed against her.

Nalinee was named by the US Department of the Treasury in November 2008 as a businesswoman who facilitated a number of financial, real estate, and gem-related transactions of behalf of Mugabe's wife Grace. That led to her US-based assets frozen by the American government in 2008 on accusations that she was a "crony" providing financial and logistical support to the Mugabe regime.

She had served as a trade representative before being tapped as Minister to the Prime Minister's office this week.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra however defended her decision to appoint Nalinee as "in line with the constitution." (MCOT online news)

The Nation

A small group of key figures in the ruling Pheu Thai Party agreed yesterday to push for Nalinee Taveesin, the newly appointed Prime Minister's Office minister who is on a US blacklist, to leave office soon to avoid causing negative impact on the government. A party source said the decision was reached at yesterday's meeting of the politicians at the Pheu Thai headquarters.

Innocent until proven guilty?

Does this only apply in Thailand but not in the USA?

It seems Ms Nalinee said in a press conference on Sunday afternoon the US Senate had confirmed that she had not been banned from entering the US and that Washington had only prohibited its citizens from entering into personal financial transactions with her.

In other words, she's like a model citizen, a worthy representative for the current Thai government (and people ?).

True, she isn't banned from entering, only every US company and citizens are forbidden to enter into any financial transactions with her. So she will not travel there for vacation anytime soon.

It takes some doing to get on this SDN Blacklist. The US does not put the names of individuals or companies on this list frivolously in terms of money laundering, drug trafficking, or terrorism. Here is the definition of the SDN Blacklist -

As part of its enforcement efforts, OFAC publishes a list of individuals and companies owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries. It also lists individuals, groups, and entities, such as terrorists and narcotics traffickers designated under programs that are not country-specific. Collectively, such individuals and companies are called "Specially Designated Nationals" or "SDNs." Their assets are blocked and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them.

OFAC is Office of Foreign Assets Control. Note that US citizens are "prohibited" from dealing with anyone on this list. Therefore, any US citizen would be prohibited from dealing with Nalinee Joy Taveesin (The way that her name is spelled on her passport). Makes it difficult for PM Yingluck to maintain diplomatic relations with the US since her Office Minister is on this list and any US citizen is prohibited from dealing with her.
