Sadly enough my grandmother passed away in France and I need to fly to Paris right away. Unfortunely my current visa and work permit will expire next week and I can not find a ticket back before that date. The school where I work has not finished preparing the documents for the extension yet, I am afraid they will finish that too late for me. What do you suggest if this happens?

1. Can I apply for a reentry permit longer than my current visa and apply for the renewal when I come back, a couple of days after my current visa expiration?

2. Should I try to ask them in my school to send me the documents to Paris and apply at the Thai consulate there? I will be in Paris just one week and it is holiday season! I am not sure if it will be enough time to get it from the consulate before coming back.

3. Should I cancel my trip? I hope this is not the answer.

Thanks in advance!

1. Re entry permit is keyed to permitted to stay stamp - no longer.

2. I would take what you have so that you can obtain a new non immigrant visa. It is not that unusual to have to make a trip out for a new visa before the work period is issued the first time. All is not lost - you just need to get another visa.

Thanks for your fast response, Lopburi3. I may try that.

Even if I can send my visa renewal application before leaving, I am not sure if it is o.k. to do that and apply for a reentry permit on the same day, and leave the country the day after that.

1.  Re entry permit is keyed to permitted to stay stamp - no longer..

Anyway, I was wondering if it would be possible to get that re entry permit and pay 2 or 3 days fine of overstay in advance. That would be 400 or 600 baht.

Thank you!

If you can get the extension paperwork in you will receive an extension of stay while under consideration so you could get a re-entry permit on that period of time without any problem.

As for paying fine in advance no way that is going to fly and you do not want overstay on your record in any case.

But another chance is to ask immigration for a 30 day extension of your visa on the basis of your emergency travel even if your paperwork is not ready yet. It would be worth the try and if approved you could obtain the re entry permit and return within that time frame and hopefully your extension paperwork would be ready for you to submit.

I would go immediatley to Immigration and ask their advice - nothing to lose as I have always found them to be reasonable and helpful.
