Sonthi says talk of him replacing Yingluck is 'nonsense'

BANGKOK: -- General Sonthi Boonyaratglin yesterday dismissed speculation that he would soon replace Yingluck Shinawatra as prime minister, with the blessing of ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra.

"This is nonsense. There is no likelihood of that," he said when asked to comment on a claim by yellow-shirt leader Prapan Khoonmee.

Sonthi, who is chairman of the ad hoc House committee on national reconciliation, also denied Prapan's claim that Sonthi planned to join the Wadah Group of Muslim politicians from the deep South, who are considering a return to the ruling Pheu Thai Party.

"Wadah has no connection to me," Sonthi said.

Now an MP and leader of the small Matubhum Party, he was backed by Pheu Thai MPs, who form a majority on the House panel on reconciliation, to become its chairman.

The panel submitted its reconciliation proposals to the House of Representatives, which on Thursday night voted to pass the measures on to the Cabinet for further action. Among the more controversial measures proposed by the Sonthi panel are a general amnesty for all people involved in the political conflict and the expunging of all legal cases initiated by the post-coup Assets Examination Commit-tee, including those in which courts have handed down verdicts.

While serving as the Army chief, General Sonthi in September 2006 led a coup that overthrew Thaksin's government.

During a programme on pro-yellow-shirt, satellite-based ASTV, Prapan said he had recently learned that the Wadah Group was returning to the Pheu Thai fold, with Sonthi becoming part of the group.

He also claimed that "the fugitive on the run overseas" - seen as a reference to Thaksin - passed a message to Sonthi through a Wadah leader that in May there would be a Cabinet reshuffle, in which Yingluck would step down as prime minister and Sonthi would be invited to replace her.

"That could be why Sonthi accepted the post of reconciliation committee chairman and worked devotedly under the close watch of Wattana Muangsuk," Prapan said, referring to the committee's deputy chairman, a Thaksin confidant.

Prapan said red-shirt leaders had developed cordial ties with Sonthi and even voiced moral support for him publicly.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday his Democrat Party would monitor the government's dealings in relation to reconciliation to ensure that the national interest is not compromised for the benefit of an individual.

Wow, they are fixated aren't they. How can reconciliation stuff advance in the face of such fixation. Just goes to show the cynical approach to this idea of reconciling by some, and the farce that it is.......... They are up-and-down like a yo-yo. One minute trying to use reconciliation discussions to advance their anti-Thaksin agenda, the next trying to sound high-principled about the thing, and next using it to obfuscate their culpabilities through deferment and delay......... This erratic and capricious approach shows scornful intent and the illogic-ness of this whole reconciliation thing......... Just deep-six it, and rely on future elections to order the Thai political space, imho

Nothing to say about the meat of the post, so have a go at the "gravy" filler at the bottom.

"Prapan said red-shirt leaders had developed cordial ties with Sonthi and even voiced moral support for him publicly."

How about this piece? How do you explain you supposedly morally virtuous red leaders sucking up to the arch coup leader? Political pragmatism, or mercenaries dancing to the piper's tune?

Is this not what the opposition party is supposed to do? Actually if the rich red leaders would put the poor first it would be a great help for reconciliation, when you have to try to stop all the thievery from above things become exhausting. Do whats right so Mark can have a rest.

See, there's just a little bit of a clue there. Of course, generally one knows that you can always rely on a claim from the PAD which aims to create friction amongst the PTP and UDD as being the truth. They have no political agenda whatsoever.coffee1.gif

A yellowshirt avowed opponent of Thaksin makes a statement about succession in the PTP and you accept it as the gospel truth.

Go figger.

And why replacing Yingluck? She isn't worse than any other premier. OK she is silly and has no idea what she is talking about, but where is the difference to any other PM?

Only the democrat party and the Nation could come up with this kind of rumors. A coup taker will never ever be acceptable for the masses who all know that the military raped their freedom and in many cases robbed the lives of their friends and relatives. Only a sick mind must (probably a yellow shirt) could come up with such a theory.

Fixated like the Pheu Thai "it's not about Thaksin" party.

Neither the Democrats nor theNation came with this rumour. The OP had "a claim by yellow-shirt leader Prapan Khoonmee" to which Gen. Sonthi commented "This is nonsense. There is no likelihood of that".

The couptaker MP Gen. Sonthi who aligned himself and his party with Pheu Thai and who is for a general amnesty may be concerned that the small print in the 2007 Constitution, granting him and his fellow coupists immunity, is or will be withdawn in one of the rewrites. Even Dept. PM Pol. Captain Chalerm may already have written his own version.

"Sonthi finds it easier not to face the past

So how many of you, dear readers, are seriously attempting to honour the recent request by 2006 coup-leader turned national-reconciliation-maker General Sonthi Boonyaratglin to forget half a decade of political conflict and move on?

This writer for one finds it rather disturbing, because Thai society does not yet know if there was any mastermind behind the September 19, 2006 military coup that ousted Thaksin Shinawatra. Sonthi is essentially asking all of us to forget the past, which is still shrouded in mystery. He vowed to reveal all after he's dead through a book he is writing. But if for some reason he fails to do so, will we need to contact a "medium" to remind him of his promise in the afterworld?

The truth may be bitter and complicated, but how can society learn from its mistakes and become mature if it cannot confront its past?"

If woman can be PM, why not Muslim.

Yingluck may be good looking, but she is not as smart as Mark, as drunk as Chalerm, as corrupted as Suthep, as quiet as Chuan, as short as Banharn, nor as fat as Chavalit.

Well I wouldn't bet for the corrupt part. But yes it doesn't make a difference if Somchai, Sonthi, Yingluck or Kermit the Frog makes was Thaksins tells them to do.

As a reporter for the Nation he seemingly doesn't know a great deal about (fairly) recent history - some events being "shrouded in mystery" and all that, yeh right. If anything useful can be taken from the article it is this

Society needs a collective memory of the past. There may be varying versions of public memories, that is fine, but we can't keep on forgetting the past and repeating similar mistakes, over and over again.

For the hard of thinking that means there is no one theory or fact, there are varying views which are just as relevant, sometimes more so and they won't go away just because the baying masses on this forum demand it.

I don't even accept gospels as truth, nor do I accept that Sonthi is likely to be PM. I DO however believe the statement that I quoted.

You really are unaware of what is going on here in Thailand aren't you. Why don't you get your nose out of the comic book you re reading and have a look at Thailand.

Of course their will be no reconciliation as long as one man wants to be the dictator. Take Thaksin out of the picture and you will see some progress towards reconciliation. We just came through a serious flood and the government spent more time trying to help Thaksin get a amnesty than they did in helping the people affected by the flood. Think of the time they could have been using to work for Thailand instad of running off to Dubai and Hong Kong just to visit and old friend.

Yes how can reconciliation advance in the face of such fixation on the ruling government trying to get a convicted criminal a free get out of jail card. If you look at it they do not even deny he is a criminal they say the whole thing was politically motivated not a word about his innocence.

You really think the red shirt masses know what freedom is. Is that what they were doing in down town Bangkok in 2010 practicing their freedom.

After reading many of your posts I am a little bit curious were you camping out with them.

The "get out of jail card" will not be free. Thaksin has been, and still is, willing to invest plenty of his money in order to get it.

I don't think the Red Shirts or Pheu Thai would agree with you. Only their views, theories and version of history are the truth.
