[Myanmar] NLD Balks at Oath on Constitution

The National League for Democracy (NLD), Burma’s main opposition party, says that an oath that new MPs must swear before joining Parliament could be a hurdle for the party’s candidates elected last week. The vow to safeguard the country’s military-drafted Constitution runs contrary to the NLD’s insistence that key provisions of the charter be scrapped—specifically, those that guarantee the armed forces a leading role in national politics. “It is impossible for NLD elected candidates to take that oath when they join Parliament,†NLD spokesman Nyan Win was quoted by Reuters as saying.
