@ Mods:

Just a quick query, what is the state of the internet in Myanmar at the minute for any interaction from people living/working there?

The last time (couple of years ago granted) that I was there on a job, internet restriction was in full swing, even to the point of retrieving emails. Even mobile phones were dead but I believe that has now lifted, in commercial areas anyway.

nop. Internet is still the same. Speed wide a little bit better. At Internet cafe, still suck due to sharing a lot of pc.

3 mnths ago the internet speed seemed roughly similar to dial up from 10 years ago and even less reliable.##And that was EVERYWHERE. oh 3/4 star hotels s were a little bit better but not much. Didnt come xcross any censorship but having mobiles now is open , you just need the cash, but they are V V expensive and out of reach for the average person

One improvement is that almost all the censorship has been removed.

Also internet is now available on mobile (CDMA 850 EVDO), but still very slow.

Slow and not terribly reliable. If you are using an internet cafe, and the speed is abysmal, sometimes the staff can help you optimise for your specific application- or if you really need something high intensity (like for telephony) they can charge you a premium rate and give you more of their bandwidth... but usually still kinda abysmal.

If you need internet for work (fast or approaching useable international transit to the US / Europe) then you'll have a big problem.

For now your only hope is satellite internet for £xxx per month and that isn't great by all accounts.

Internet is a hell of a lot better speed wise, has been for several months. I'm connected through Bagan Cybertech and I have no problems although quite a few websites are still censored. I also have it on my GSM phone, that can be a bit slow, depending on time of day, but it seems that nothing is censored on that, nothing that I have come across anyway.

No idea about internet cafes etc., never use them.

As a permanent resident, internet speed/reliability is way way better than it ever has been. A company called Redlink now offer home Wifi without the need for a landline - it is not cheap by any means and is not as fast as - even - Thailand, but it is fine for internet browsing. Uploading a file of pics to, for example, Facebook used to take hours, now minutes. Even the Government Myanmar Net, which is a lot cheaper, is head and shoulders above what was available even last year

My work in Yangon requires me to download YouTube videos (alphabet learning etc). The only time that I can successfully download these 3 minute video clips is about 6am, which is why I am a very early starter in the office!

Something very strange happened yesterday with my internet. Having been off for several hours it came back at 5pm. I wanted to download a Windows Service pack from Microsoft which was a 435 Mb file. I had half expected it to take several hours, I even ensure I use an internet download piece of software in case (as it invariably does) the connection drops out and I can continue the download later without restarting.

It downloaded in 10 mins!!! I was in shock for a further 30 mins....

Something going on, I guess the outage was an upgrade? Either way it's very welcome.

I spoke too soon.

Back to it's usual crappy speed. Some idiot must have switched "it" on for ordinary people by mistake.

Do you notice that it is also very slow between 3 & 4pm every day? At least that's my experience in our office.

Varies. It used to be the case that it was slow from 9am to 10-11pm (i.e. from when offices opened to when the internet cafes closed), now it seems to have a mind of it's own! It's been back to it's usual speed since I last posted above.

The thing with the Internet in Myanmar was, and as i hear since i left still is, restriction. When I was running the show there, not going past the local censorship and being able to traffic shape my way around the problem. Even with the new bandwidth allocation, we faced externally placed attacks specifically aimed at degrading the service. During times of "hardship" the service would experience a "technical fault". Twice I physically powered down the gateways there. Once by gunpoint. Other times I was able to use my placement as a assistance to others (Nargis).

I do hope the state of the Internet in Myanmar improves now the country has opened up. But if the shit hits the fan, buy stamps...

Hi all, i'm resurrecting this Thread (if it's allowed dear Mods).

Would like to know how things are now, if they have changed :

- ease to get Internet when you rent a house (and price)

- Satellite installation if you live in remote places.

Thanks by advance for any pointers !

Cheers
