ChouDoufu Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 howdy, i'll be flying from yangon into BKK in july, then bicycling directly to cambodia via phanom sarakham, and highway 3259 thru the national park. i'm living in china now, and the only thailand maps i've found has a scale of 1:3.6 million. i've got a couple THINKNET maps of northern thailand, much more useful for cycling with a scale of 1:550K, and both thai and english. needing this one: http://www.mapstop.co.uk/product5046_Central---Eastern-Thailand--Bilingual-Map---Thinknet.aspx anybody know if this series of maps is available at any of the shops inside the airport? or recommend a bookstore near the airport (lat krabang district)? i posted on lonely planet also, got a possible bookstore inside the airport, and an asiabooks 15km away.
impulse Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 I've never seen that particular brand of maps in Thailand. But I have been extremely pleased at the wide availability of maps in bookstores on just about every urban block in Bangkok, and in many small towns. You may also decide to buy an atlas that spreads the maps out over dozens of pages. You should be able to find a reasonably scaled bilingual map in one of the news/book stands in the BKK airport. If you don't pass one on your way from the immigration exit to the street, try going up 1 or 2 floors before you head out. Failing that, you'll pass a bunch of bright green signs for "Asia Books" shops no matter what route you take out of Bangkok.
asanee Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 there is now an Asiabooks outlet on the DEPARTure level-far west end, beyond row Y/Z or so-best for trying. There are also various pailin magazine shops in terminal-they may stock some, but this is really hit+miss-both that part. map-brand and the one you are looking for may or may not be in stock. Lad krabang will be of no use.- Closest by areas with good shops-tesco/BigC and and the lot are in Minburi and in bangkapi (also the Mall there). Also look for the much more present Thai magazine shops named See-ed or B2S-they also stock most maps available.
sunseaker Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Maps are poor at best in Thailand. No thai ever saw the point in having accurate maps. But I would recommend using GPS on your iPhone or what ever, their are loads of gps apps you can download for free Inc cycling apps with maps etc.. be careful cycling into Cambodia ! Hope your not doing it alone. Avoid any display of wealth, padlock your bike to your leg and never turn your back on it or it will be gone!
ChouDoufu Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 thanks everyone for the replies. i went to the thinknet website where i found a list of shops that carry their maps. if i can't find one at the airport, i'll keep a lookout for those stores on the way out of bangkok. or i may find one along the way in mueang chachoengsao or phanom sarakham. i'll go prepared with a sketch map taken from google maps. that should be sufficient assuming i don't need to detour. or get lost. no gps. no netbook. no ipad/pod/phone/thingy. no kindle. no blackberry. no pager. no phone. i'm doing this partially to get away from all that crap. i will take a small camera. and a (paper) notebook.
soundman Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 But I would recommend using GPS on your iPhone or what ever, their are loads of gps apps you can download for free Inc cycling apps with maps etc.. Current set of generic road maps downloadable for free are actually reasonably good for getting around.
