How Do You Stop A Program Running Under Windows Xp?

I use the Avira program to protect my computer but it's a devil for pop-up adverts.

To stop this I have deleted the program that produces them, avnotify.exe, but when Avira downloads its next update avnotify is replaced and the pop-up adverts start again.

I read that if you use Windows policy and add avnotify.exe to the disallowed list it will no longer run. This isn't true. Upon reading the small print you find that the 'do not allow this program to run' policy stops a user from starting a program , it does not stop an existing program calling another program.

So, has anybody any idea how to stop a program from being started?

I use Windows XP.

And please, don't tell me to use another anti-virus, I'm happy with Avira apart from this.

Ta very much.

in the RUN box type msconfig , when the system config utility box pops up click on the start up tab and then untick any programs that you dont want to automatically run on pc start up ..this would be the easiest way just let avira update and there should be an option to block your problem program

XP? Is this a 10 year old thread?

Hey, I bought my used Toshiba laptop from Best Buy back in 2005. It has XP on it and it does all that I need. It came with the MS WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint, and ACCESS. The internet I use it for works just fine. Nothing against new stuff, but this old stuff does all that I need. I save my $USD for long vacations in Thailand and imminent retirement!

Jiu-jitsu, thanks very much, works like a charm.

I used the Software Restriction Policy to disallow ipmgui.exe and avnotify.exe and haven't had a pop-up since. Thanks again.
