Canada has suspended most of its sanctions against Burma, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said on Tuesday. The move was taken in response to what he called the country’s “encouraging steps†towards democracy. Baird said Canada’s sanctions on imports, exports and financial transactions will be suspended, although an embargo will be maintained on sales of arms and military technology. During a trip to Burma last month, Baird personally conferred honorary Canadian citizenship on pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and met members of the new nominally civilian leadership.
