[Myanmar] Kio Rejects Peace Talks Amid Buildup

The Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) has said it won’t attend proposed peace talks with the government in the Kachin State capital of Myitkyina because of an ongoing escalation of the Burmese Army’s offensive against its military wing, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA). According to a report by Mizzima, KIO spokesman La Nang said the government army has sent more troops to areas near the group’s headquarters in Laiza and appears to be preparing for an assault on its outposts. The latest round of talks were to be the fourth since fighting started last June.
