Is There Much Seafood In Udon Thani?

Featured Replies

I was wondering what the seafood situation is like in Udon Thani. I like squid, bubbling fish, grilled fish, etc...is it pretty abundant?

Not much FRESH seafood, emphasis on sea! But any amount of local freshwater fish, prawns (snrimp, goong or whatever) etc. still flapping and swimming in aerated ponds within the markets. Dunno what a 'bubbling fish' is but cooked fish can be bought within a short walk from anywhere.

Does Pla-Raa count as seafood? If so, there's plenty of it.

My rule of thumb is - if it smells of fish it aint fresh. If its dead its not fresh but if you just killed it...it is.

Squid is not indigenous to the waterways of Isaan so any you buy is not going to be fresh.

I don' know about Udon Thani , but in Khon Kaen where I am, (not so far from Udon Thani) there is plenty of sea food, The Morning Market is full off live fish, squid and shrimp, All the Major retail stores have a sea food section that is well stocked in my opinion.

I find Macro to have a large selection.

I Imagine the situation to be the same in Udon Thani.

I always found fresh water local items to be far superior to anything sea-based.

I believe this might be what grown to be accustomed to.
