BANGKOK, May 1 -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday vowed to speed up improving the quality of life for Thailand’s workers while promising that the Bt300 minimum wage would cover all provinces nationwide within the coming year.

In her televised Labour Day address, the premier thanked workers for playing a crucial role in the nation's economic and social development.

She said the government has implemented various measures to help improve the ability of workers to cope with the rapid change of the economy and society that results from internal and external factors.

The government wants workers to have suitable welfare, better safety, and good occupational health and environment in the workplace, she said.

To ensure security and a better quality of life, she said the Bt300 minimum wage has been implemented in seven provinces and will cover all provinces by the end of 2013.

The premier said that so-called white factory and industrial estate projects have been implemented as part of measures to prevent drug use in the workplace, the government has also encouraged companies to observe the higher labour standards and develop improved welfare for workers.

The government also supports establishing a labour relations plan to effectively help end the conflict between employers and employees with fairness and within the legal framework.

She said the government has supported skill training for workers, particularly language skills, to prepare Thai labour for implementation of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. (MCOT online news)

the government's minimum wage increase in 7 pilot provinces could prompt around 1/3 of employers to dismiss workers in the next 12-18 months.

Great, instead of one third of 7 provinces it will be one third nationwide....the good news is she hasn't kept a promise yet.

This has been proven over and over, Where is the education in her plan, without education, Thai people are only a laborer and they are many of them all over any may are paid a lot less than Thailand

According to the polls this "improving" so far has been pretty much what they say "negative growth", if she speeds it up, wouldn't it mean quality of life is going be much much worse thanks to her efforts?

So she isn't lying, she is just telling it as it is but people are eternal optimists and read it differently.

vows to - that really says it all - promises before and after the election - always future promises never fulfilled because they never can achieve anything but discontent - making rice unaffordable (i.e. taking the food out of the baby's mouth - sickening - that sure is really improving people's life. Any government must make rice cheap as the foundation of policy - they have chosen to do the opposite (vote buying) - make the electorate hungry.

Soon, Asia will be calling Thailand the dying country, but not before a certain gang have filled their boots by using, then abusing, then ruining the poor they say they care for.

Wait till the gov gets its smutty mitts on the BoT reserves, then you will have meltdown.

As the baht dies and is worth nothing, which gang will buy the country for peanuts, and how many reds will die when they protest? Far more than last time.

BTW; how many families could the cost of a private jet to Manchester feed for a year?

Making a lot of vowing lately!

Hmmm, unfortunately not a lot of actual fulfillment to all these vows.

May need to actually produce some true visionary policies which include a well thought-out long term education plan, improved employment prospects for all and much improved economic management. Oh but there's the basic problem, the word that comes to mind true "management"!

Out of 63,000,000 people is this the best they can find?

One poster suggested on another thread that what's really happening here is the potential making of the Shinawatra dynasty; which could be quite debilitating for the country if it takes hold.

The reality is that there is a general lack of visionary opposition that can gain the attention of the masses whereas the charismatic leadership of Shinawatra easily persuades the uneducated and naive to have faith that all will be well to just have faith. Notice it's all sounding a bit religious with all this vowing and pledging.

I just read the article and it looked like one of her promissory speeches when she was running for election.

Is there a election coming up? Or is this just her way of covering up the miserable job her and her brother have done?

One oil company handed over all their refining to a Singapore company because they felt that they could not trust themselves with corruption - and it works excellently. Everything audited by Singaporeans and no funds missing. Perhaps it is time for Thailand to hand over the governing of the country to Singapore. Or at least get Singapore auuditors to manage the finance department - to make sure the Taksin clan is not carrying away the country's wealth.

The problem is she can spit in their faces and it will be honey to their lips. In their eyes she and her clan can do no wrong. There are none so blind as those who will not see...unfortunately. Hope they wake up some day to see Yingluck for what she really is and what she stands for,

BANGKOK: -- The government insisted yesterday it would roll out the Bt300 daily minimum wage to the remaining 70 provinces as scheduled following its launch in seven provinces including Bangkok on April 7, despite employers' complaints and threats of non-compliance.

In her speech at the main May Day event at the Royal Plaza, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the government would meet the election promise of a Bt300 wage across the country by January next year, and vowed to keep prices of commodities as low as possible to ease the financial burden on low-income earners.

Labour Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap said the increasing price of goods "corresponded with normal marketing conditions", but called on producers not to raise prices further. He said that employees entitled to but still not receiving the Bt300 daily minimum could submit complaints to the ministry, adding that no petition had been lodged so far.

Citing concerns over higher costs and requests by employers to delay the launch date for nationwide payment of Bt300 to 2015, he said no business owners had submitted reports on "clear impacts" to their ventures resulting from the Bt300 wage, and that the launch date of next January had been declared in law and must be abided by.

The Tripartite Wage Committee, chaired by Somkiat Chayasriwong, said the launch date could not be changed, but a petition to be submitted by employers' representatives in today's meeting would be accepted. "It is their right to create a petition but the final decision rests on the entire Committee's agreement," he said.

Chaiyaphorn Janthana, chairman of the Council of Employees of Independent Labour of Thailand, said his group was opposed to a delay in the roll-out of the Bt300 minimum wage, as the price of everyday goods had soared and employees' lives were already difficult.

Another labour leader, Chalee Loisung, chairman of the Thai Labour Reconciliation Committee, called on the government to work on cutting the cost of living by reducing the price of petrol and cooking gas along with tariffs for public transport.

He also said that a fair, across-the-board wage scale must be worked out to create annual pay raises, while parliament should accept a bill on state welfare and social security in the people's name and pass it into a law.

That's what happens everytime a wage-hike goes into effect. Welcome to basic economics; it's a b*tch and it isn't like pulling weeds out of the ground (agrarian mentalities applied to complex realities). If you were running a business, would you give the staff time to figure productivity out? As long as Thais are among the most expensive laborers in Asia, they're going to get a lot questions. Unfortunately, answers are in short supplyl.
