Does anyone have any recommendations for Isaan type places, or at least places that serve decent somtam and bbq chicken? Sticky rice optional.

The first small Soi you come to that runs between Asoke and Soi 19, just East of the Health Land Massage place is a sidewalk restaurant that has been there for years. They make excellent somtam, grilled chicken and sticky-rice.

nice place.. down off Soi Ekamai - Sukhumvit 63, and soi Charoenjai Inside and outside dining, good food decent prices and locals and farangs go there.

Across from Big C on Rachadapisek. Great Moo Yang as well. Closed Sundays, packed out @ lunch.

Next to Wat Thewarat Kunchorn Worawihan (google map it) you'll see 2 som tam sellers selling from 4 to 9pm the seller nearest the entrance to the wat is the best. You'll see them to your right.

My tip for best som tam in Bangkok, my opinion :/

the place on Ekkamai that others mentioned is good, they have live music sometimes too.

Sidewalk restaurant just past Central World driveway, Ratchaphrasong. Very popular with Thais, always busy after 6pm. Pla Khow, Nam Tok Moo, Yum Talay there is also excellent.

Sukhumvit Soi 12, about 100 m down on the left, opposite big massage palace (not Darling, past that). Just a street stall but the best I've had in Bangkok.

For true lovers of Gai Yang, a pilgrimage to Udon Thani is essential!

Sure. It is under the skywalk, very near the police box. Right across from the mall - great food. Packed out with Thai's daily and the staff speaks a bit of English as well.

at the bottom of ekamai bts, that outdoor restaurant that is currently selling grilled seafood and other stuff.... very good sum tum and etc.
