BANGKOK: -- The travel website www.cnngo.com recently ranked Thailand’s capital of Bangkok as one of Asia’s 10 greatest street food cities. The website proclaimed the city as a street food "heavyweight" due to its easily accessible choices of street food.

In the feature, 10 kinds of local Thai delicacies were presented, ranging from No. 1 the popular Phat See Ew noodles to No. 10 Khanom Khrok, a well-known Thai dessert. The traditional Thai tea with milk Cha Yen also came in at No. 8. The full list is as follows:

1.Phat See Ew (stir-fried rich noodles with broccoli and dark soy sauce)

2.Som Tam (spicy papaya salad)

3.Moo Ping (grilled pork skewers)

4.Boat noodles (assorted noodles in small bowls)

5.Khao Phat Poo (crab fried rice)

6.Moo Dat Diew (marinated dried pork)

7.Khanom Jeen (fermented rice noodles with curry)

8.Cha Yen (Thai tea with milk)

9.Khao Niew Mamuang (sticky rice with mango)

10.Khanom Khrok (sweet coconut pudding)

The website also recommended one restaurant famous for each of the above foods with corresponding location on a Bangkok map.

Other greatest food cities in Asia include Taipei, Penang, Fukuoka, Hanoi, Singapore, Seoul, Xi'an, Manila, and Phnom Pehn.

Agree 100% we do have excellent street food - in fact I feel that its the best in Asia!

Not quite sure how Singapore qualifies - they dont really have street food at all - its pretend street food in a hawker market, but the thought is the same I guess. Ialso note that KL was not mentioned - rightly so too - anyone I know who has eaten street food in Malaysia, also complained of a bad case of the squirts (or worse) immediately afterwards.

Real Thai food is some of the best and tastiest in the world - real meaning it has not been fiddled to make it suit western palates. I was horrified last year in Sydney to find cauliflower in a bowl of Tom Kha Kai...

Phnom Pehn was disgusting!!! Thailand on the other hand Y U M! Some of those choices on Thai street food were so so Som Tam should be #1 even though I hate the dish. and Moo Ping is good but BBQ pork on a stick is pretty international.

Penang is on the list. I don't remember having any big problems there or in KL. I really liked the street food in Malaysia because they have street Indian food. I especially love street side tandoori chicken and naan places, they're amazing and I wish there was something like that in Thailand.

Another totally useless news story.

I will assume the epicure journo's didnt venture too far from their plush Sukhumvit hotels.

Did they test food in the thousands of dog and rat infested soi's that are the real Bangkok. I doubt it.

Outdoor street food is what it is due to obvious limitations.. Some good some bad.Doesnt matter what city it is.

"Why are you here" threads are running hot and heavy as of late - Thailand, not just Bangkok's street food is a great reason to stick around. It is delicious, cheap, clean, varied and never a dull moment.

If you can live on Thai street food (as the Thai's do) you will save a bundle of money, neve need to cook, have access to great food 24/7 and actually if you really come to love the food - practically have a hobby.

I am always amazed at the variety from N to S and E to W. Always something new or something I am crazy happy to find.

Oh yes, Malay and Singaporean hawkers run a great second - but the food is pretty standard. Not so in Thailand. Varies greatly not only by region, but by vendor.

YUM

Not really dug into it, but looks like a good food blog, the deserts section is a real plus for farang as well. Vegetarian - well, not if you want to eat real Thai food, but maybe this section could be good for Buddhist holidays. very well done.

Always kicking myself for not doing a food blog myself....

"plush Sukhumvit hotels"........Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, Landmark, Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Grand Millennium., all within a two minute walk of dog & rat infested Sois which have great street food. So what's your point other than to create another totally useless post to bitch about something people obviously find interesting? "real Bangkok".....Bangkok for some is penthouse condos and chauffeur driven cars, while for others it is dog & rat infested Sois, each one equally being the "real Bangkok" depending one which person's reality you are citing. Street level logistical infrastructure to support a vibrant and safe supply of ingredients to the street vendors, along with a heritage and knowledge of cooking in this manor is huge piece of the puzzle. Some cities have it and most do not, Bangkok has it and it is worthy of notoriety despite those burned-out & tormented souls who wish to shit on any positive attention brought to Thailand

I think hawker stalls definitely do count as street food and I also think KL, Penang, and Singapore are ALL better than Bangkok in that regard.

yeah, Penang definitely #1...does the lady still do the burgers at the entrance to NEP?

we got some great food down the market here in south Suphanburi...bbq bananas with fried tofu...yassuh!

Hawker stalls count, I would even include low-end many restaurants which no doubt many originated as street food themselves. I recently saw on Thai TV a fantastic Chinese seafood "restaurant" that looked totally yummy. My GF and self promised we would try to find it. Prices were NOT cheap abt B300+ a plate but the seafood was first rate, you'd pay triple for this dish in a real restaurant. Yarowat it was.

Penang is OK, a bit overrated. Not a lot of night street food (that touristy area up by the E&O not withstanding), most of the people on the island use hawker food courts - I think the better food is perhaps there and in the smaller restaurants strewn about the city. I would not eat in Chulia, it is basically overpriced, bland, dirty Chinese food. Two food courts one out by the mall and another down by the water in front of the courthouse/community center. Nasi Kandar Line Clear !

Too funny, people come to Thailand and then whinge about how it's, Thailand! RE: rats and dogs.

What were the other 9, and what was the order?

You can follow the link? http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/eat/asia-street-food-cities-612721?page=0,0 They weren't ranked in order, as far as I could determine.

FYI, KF Seetoh has a new show starting tomorrow (Monday, 7 May at 21:30) "The Food Surprise!" on TLC (Channel 153 on TrueVisions).

There are a ton of great Asian street food shows on AFC, amazingly none on/about Thailand/Bangkok. Not sure why this is?

As we live in Thailand, where would we whine about? Finland?
