Airline'S Ticket To Trouble

Airline's ticket to trouble: how a man called Vroom got unlimited first class flights for life

There are frequent fliers, and then there are people like Jacques Vroom and Steven Rothstein.

Both men bought tickets that gave them unlimited first-class travel for life on American Airlines. It was almost like owning a fleet of private jets.

Passes in hand, Rothstein and Vroom flew for business. They flew for pleasure. They flew just because they liked being on planes. They bypassed long lines, booked backup itineraries in case the weather turned, and never worried about cancellation fees. Flight crews memorised their names and favourite meals.

Each had paid American more than $US350,000 for an unlimited AAirpass and a companion ticket that allowed them to take someone along on their adventures. Both agree it was the best purchase they ever made, one that completely redefined their lives.

I can't imagine getting on a plane for any other reason than to reach my destination.

If they were doing those trips for the pleasure of travelling then they have my sincere pity.

On AA...if it was Qatar first or Thai first then yeah...I would happily join in! biggrin.png

I believe some people become addicted to surgery as well.

You'd have to do a heck of a lot of flights to get your money's worth. But smokie's got it - why the heck would you fly for the sake of it? I sincerely do not enjoy flying! I can rarely sleep on board, the food is always little above crap with any airline (and you know the food trolleys are out by the awful smell that permeates the plane), and being a smoker who is not able to smoke on board these days, I don't drink to pass the time because it gives me worse cravings for a smoke. I suspect that people who would get value are only those who run businesses that require regular commuting.

But think of this - it's flying first class, so the food's a bit better.

One could live one's life on this - flying around, using the first class lounges (in some airports) for a shower, etc., even sleeping in a cubicle in a lot of them.

And not spending a penny on any of it.

Arrange your flights properly and you'll get overnight stays for free in various hotels,

Love your thinking, Humph.

Reckon it would be fun time.

Imagine flying off to all the news hotspots, a cool lifestyle.

Yeah, I think Humph has it there.

Just imagine... retire in the air.

I assume you blokes have got your tongues planted firmly against your cheeks. My definition of relaxation has nothing to do with flying around endlessly, eating reheated food and wandering aimlessly around airport terminals. Ask anyone who air commutes for a living.

I think most of us have thought about visiting exotic ports and places off the beaten track, but in most cases, the idea is kiboshed more by worries of the attendant aggravation than the cost. I've done a fair bit of traveling in my time - probably not as much as Humph or Pete, but I've seen a fair slice of the world. I'm tired of it. I'm happy to put my feet up here in Asia and they can take me out again in a box. Okay, perhaps a young bloke (or woman) may get a kick out of it for a while, but $350,000 worth (air component only)? I don't think so...

I'm not saying it would appeal to everyone but have you ever seen those cars that park on any road going by the end of a runway at a major airport with people just watching the planes land and take off?

Some people never get sick of the glamour of flying and the taste of airport food, I know I have, but it's a bit like living in a small boat, heaven to some, hell to others.
