I am planning on dividing my bedroom from my living room in my small studio. Initially, i'm interested in getting some help with the hardware. I have come across some very nice sliding doors in Bangkok that slide smooth and even seem well insulated. And I have come across the really bad stuff that rattles and screeches and is difficult to move. Any brand or recommended place to buy the good stuff that will last and perform well?? I have about a 3 meter area to cover, and I think i'd like one half of it to be immovable, with the other half being able to slide over the immovable half. I have never done this before, so i'm not sure if that is the best way to go, but it can definitely only open at one end.

Also, I have initially been looking at sliding doors in places like hospitals and schools in Bangkok, and many of them simply have tracks on the ceiling, and the window or door just slides a tad above the ground. I think this style would do for my needs, as it seems easy to install and i'd really like to avoid drilling or damaging my floors in any way. Any thoughts on this? Will the top track alone be stable enough and soundproof enough (I'll be living with my wife and will no doubt be wanting to watch tv out there while she sleeps in peace, hopefully).

We have a sliding door which separates our kitchen from the living room. The door which was in place when we bought the place was a 3/4 inch piece of solid wood and was much too heavy. It actually pulled the track out of the ceiling. We had a carpenter build a door from sheets of thin plywood attached to a wood frame. Works great and was not so expensive. It is not attached at the bottom but there is not sound problem.

Up in Bangsu there is a whole area of woodworking and manufactuer's - tables, chairs, doors, etc. Nancy Chandler's map calls it 'The Wood Street" Prachana Rumit. Head over near the Bangsu MRT, then towards the Lotus Tesco - the next street after the one by the canal my map calls Pracharai. Well you know how it is with names... Anyway head up there and turn left down some of those sois and it's one wood working factory or store after another. Closed Sundays.

I bought some things in the parking lot of Home Plus Ladprao. The make it up in CM to order. It's nice and reasonable. The finish was cheap. If I buy more maybe I'd finish myself or have more explict instructions. A good oil and more elbow grease is all it needs.
