Top 10 Pervasive Tech Myths That Are Only Wasting Your Time

Ever been told that you should fully discharge your battery to prolong its life? Or that jailbreaking your phone is illegal? Or that you should wait for the newest Intel processor because it's going to be "so much faster"? These are tech myths we hear all the time, and likely spread to our friends—but most are just a waste of your time (and in some cases, they can actually harm your gadgets). Here are some of the worst offenders.

1. [insert Tweak Here] Will Speed Up Your Computer

I'd like to know which myths didn't make it in to the top ten.

Ah yes, myths prevail in many sectors of society... makes life interesting.

I have boosted the performance of my netbook (Win7 Starter, 2Gb Ram, 1.66Ghz processor) 100 % following suggestions in http://www.computingunleashed.com/speed-up-windows-7-ultimate-guide-to.html. There are other such pages out there, and of course linux users compete for breathtaking speeds.

Agree with posts above - important in windows to regularly, disk cleanup, defrag, and try not to fill your operating system drive more than 30% or windows starts to go slowwwwwwwwwwww... AA

Yes the battery one was quite helpful, I tend not to let my batteries run down completely because I knew that was no longer true, but didn't know you should do a full discharge once a month.

The best tip I heard for laptop batteries, (to prolong their lifetime), is to remove the battery when you have your laptop plugged into the mains. This will stop the battery constantly charging.

The battery charging circuit should cut off the charging when the battery is full

so there is no need to remove the battery.
