Should We Stop Calling People Overweight?

]British population is getting too fat for the planet[/b]

The human population is getting too fat for the planet, and Britain is responsible for 3 per cent of the excess flab despite only having 1 per cent of the world's people, research shows.

] ..... The American adult population is the heaviest. While the average body mass globally was 136lb 10oz (62kg), in the US it was 177lb 14oz (80.7kg). Despite having only 5 per cent of the world's population, the US accounts for almost a third of the weight because of obesity. In contrast Asia has 61 per cent of the population but only 13 per cent of the excess weight. [/b]

The British adult population is 30lb 7oz (13.8kg) fatter than the rest of the world, with an average adult body mass of 167lb 2oz (75.8kg),,,,,

From the extract above I am seill thinking that the widespread use of growth hormones in North American cattle could be a partial cause of the obesity in the US.

I am inclined to reject the comments regarding the use of machines, as the poorer section of the population seem to be the more obese, Thus the wrong diet would appear to be a more likely main causative factor.

I do agree that the fatter people get, the more they eat to fual their engine. The engine is not running efficiently, due to the lack of fitness from a young age (remember - Labour reduced compulsory exercise in UK schools) and thus burns only a part of the fuel intake.

"I have outlived my pecker."

The Penis Poem--by Willie Nelson

My nookie days are over,

My pilot light is out.

What used to be my sex appeal,

Is now my water spout.

Time was when, on its own accord,

From my trousers it would spring.

But now I've got a full time job,

To find the f***in' thing.

It used to be embarrassing,

The way it would behave.

For every single morning,

It would stand and watch me shave.

Now as old age approaches,

It sure gives me the blues.

To see it hang its little head,

And watch me tie my shoes!!

Words of wisdom from Willie Nelson on his 75th birthday.

Some information about the UK, please, somebody!

When I was a kid, we bought our vegetables from a greengrocer. Are there no longer any such people?

Fresh food markets are few and far between, I believe. I think I was told that Norwich had the last surviving one?

We still have a local Butcher, fruit and veg you can get at the local 'small supermarkets', but you have to go into town for the fresh fruit, whether it is fresher than the supermarket, I think it is, and that 10 mins away from home. Hardly difficult, supermarket or town and safe, not all people live in a safe environment.

You would think , in Western countries, that the vast majority of people, say 95+% would live in a safe environment where they could get fresh stuff.

Hide your heads, UG and JT! A really nasty statistic!

Thank God I'm in Asia... and don't stand out as an exception!

Overweight is one thing, malnourished is another. Comparing the average body mass percentage between a country and the rest of the world is misleading since in large parts of the third world people don't have enough to eat.

But different people have different concepts of what is 'enough to eat'.

In Vietnam most people eat small portions of several dishes. At weddings and other big functions I attended the food allocation was not excessive. I usually left the table slightly hungry, and I'd eaten more than most. Drunk a lot less, but ate more. Now this was a big display event each time, so I assume there was much more food than usual.

When eating at a normal VN restaurant with local clientele, I used to order two dishes instead of the one that the locals ate. Still left the table slightly hungry, but that's better than being too heavy with undigested food.

There is an excellent BBC doc on related topics going on now. Highly recommended! However, if you're of the it's 100 percent about self control, don't bother, you guys are like true believers and evidence will never sway you from your damaging dogma:

That's silly. If you had bothered to read my posts here, you would know I suggest that as ONE FACTOR among several in this COMPLEX issue. Watch the BBC show, OK?

I did read your posts JT and i have to say the thing that really stuck in my head was your use of the highlighted Obsogenic (obesogenic) environment. You must agree that you took a liking to this term.

I know it is a complex issue, yet one that has much simplicity at the heart of the matter.

No, you're wrong. There is nothing SIMPLE about the obesity epidemic. Again, watch the BBC show. Open your mind!

JT, I listened to the ABC Radio National link (or similar) you gave and it didn't correspond much at all with what you were saying. You basically cherry picked facts to suit your hypothesis. I imagine this BBC link is much the same.

Making complicated excuses for the modern day western fat situation is okay. I accept that this happens. Entire industries and academics careers are made around this.

However, that doesn't mean I have to buy into all the propaganda and vested interests and emotional hand wringing.

I acknowledged the situation is complex, but with a simplistic cause.

Surely you can open your mind JT and acknowledge this also!!

What is the simplistic cause? This isn't about excuses. It's about science and social policy because this issue is so much bigger than about just individual people.

I agree JT, it is a BIG issue. wink.png

The simplistic cause is poor diet and too much food.

JT - if you look back a couple of pages you will find I was recommending Part 1 of this programme 'The Men Who Made Us Fat'. I now have part 2 on my BBC iPlayer, but this is not viewable in SE Asia. I have tried saving this as a video file for posting, but it just don't work.

Basically Part 1 was going through the history of people first suspecting that fat made you fat, then blamed it on sugar. If either was the complete answer then by watching your dietary intake you could stay slim by avoiding a) fat B) sugar. But that don't work - one has to control the total amount of all foods eaten and balance against the exercise/energy consumed.

Those links don't come close to what you claim. No surprise there, really. It would be a first if they did.

I post this astonishing information primarily for those of you that might live on the islands of Australia, New Zealand and England. Perhaps you should rightly be concerned with the weight problem considering the problems that are addressed by a US Congressman.

wait for the 1:20 mark to become aware of the clear and present danger to all of you that reside on islands.

The simplistic cause is poor diet and too much food.

You should add lack of regular exercise to that as well. Very important for good health in general.

This guy must be related to the moron politician in Dallas who was offended by the term "Black Hole" in reference to wasting taxpayer money. At least neither is overweight so they got that going for them.

And this is an American congressman?

I somewhat admire the naval guy for ignoring the idiotic remark (or did he share the concern?).

I assume this guy would be seeking JTs vote come next election?

He's from Cynthia McKinney’s old district.

I am sure the Admiral was trying his dead level best to keep from laughing in this guy's face.

Immediately following this guy's name in the printed press you will see...(D-GA). laugh.png

Atlanta suburbs.

Its a solid democratic party district. Yes, the guy is clearly a moron but arguably better than McKinney, the anti-semite.

I think the military leaders are used to playing it cool and keeping a straight face when taking questions from politicians.

As it should be. The people are their bosses. Yes, that congressman is an embarrassment.

What JT means to say it is the voice of a BlacK Congressman. Nothing wrong with being Black or a Congressman for that matter but they tend to vote as a group. We call it the "Black Caucus". Now some will talk about the "Tea Party", but they're nothing against the "Black Caucus". Isn't that right JT?
