Thai Passport Name Change

Featured Replies

This may be a silly question...

I have just married my wife (Thai) so she now has my last name. Will she have to change her passport details. If so is this a lengthy process? She has to go to her home town to change her ID and family registration anyway before she applies for our marriage visa to Oz.

Cheers

My misses did the same thing recently, it's not too bad, just a lot of running around to do.

She has to get the name changed on her ID card and house registration book done first, TIT so it can only be done at her home town. When that's done take her passport, ID card and house reg book to the Ministry on Chaeng Wattana road in Bangkok. Any copies of anything can be done there, it's 100bt and takes 1 hour.

My wife did the passport name change too.

Just wanna let you in on one hassle we had. We took a trip to Oz via Ho Chi Minh, and because her ticket was in her new name but the old name was on the photo page of her passport caused a bit of bother in Ho Chi Minh. So just a note of caution, that even tho her name is changed in her passport and all, the old name on the photo page can cause some fuss. Just something that happened to us.

Why the hassle chareehusbee? Just show the officials the page where the name change is recorded, it's all signed, stamped and whatnot anyway. Maybe it was just some officious little jobsworth giving it the big I am!

Yeah we did of course. But it's all in thai, if I recall. The guy was in a cold sweat about it.

There are some tough rules about allowing boarding passes to people with different names on things. Had a similar experience in LAX with mismatched names. It was just a stupid thing to happen. But when you're travelling, these kinds of stupid things can raise stress levels, especially when you're proceeding to a connecting flight!

It might just be better biting the bullet and going for the new passport with the new name, imho.

Just to save hassles down the road. Can't go wrong then. *shrug*

I've just checked the wife's passport and the name change is in English, though the wording on the stamps is in Thai.

For the sake of 1000bt you may as well get her a new PP, security is so tight at airports these days so at least it'll help to stop one hassle.

Agree that it is a much better idea to buy a new passport when there is a name change. Even domestic travel these days requires matching ID (and I have had a problem with a 2 years old birth certificate having a change). Not worth the hassles.

If you do decide to go down the new passport road, do as my misses did it. Get there at 3.20pm, they close at 3.30pm, she was out by 3.30pm all finished, no waiting for hours, nothing. Went back a couple of days later and picked up her passport!

Does your wife HAVE to change her name when you get married in order to travel abroad, or is it something that you can sort out further down the line?

I ask because I am getting married soon and hopefully if G/f gets the visa, she will be coming back to the UK with me.

I suggested that wife just keeps her old name in Thai Passport (big red ROB stamp in it) and have married name in her British One.

She has so much registered stuff in LOS..I.D cards,Driving Licence couple of houses, condos, land,Share certificates, wee businesses in

her "maiden name"it would take forever to change all the

deeds and titles (if we could find "em)

Even spoke to T.G and they have registered both names in their computer for Air Miles. :o

Also when travelling it keeps things simple....Lon-LOS -Thai PP.anywhere else in the world Br.PP.......makes for a quiet life...
