Some Bangkok Pharmacists Could Easily Increase Their Sales If They Stored Products Properly

Featured Replies

After shopping around for some anti fungal cream (athletes foot from the gym) I soon realized that many medically trained pharmacists were trading unethically.

Many pharmacies in Bangkok routinely stored pharmaceuticals in non air conditioned environments typically in daily temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees.

A preparation I purchased had no affect after regular use over a period.

Looking at the package, I noted the comments: "Store below 25 C".

I challenged the particular pharmacist in question, whilst dripping with sweat in the heat of his store.

After looking nervously at the possibility of losing another sale he mumbled: The label was only a Government requirement but unnecessary".

Sure, especially as its a stipulation made by the manufacturer.

I suspect the effectiveness of many pharmaceuticals held in such conditions must be depleted in potency.

If I was a Bangkok pharmacist, I'd store my stock in refrigeration and display empty boxes.

I'd also prominently promote my ethical/quality handling practices.

when in BKK I usually go to the big pharmacy on sukh near soi nana to buy my medical supplies (they also sell whiskey and tobacco) and the insulin for my diabetes is stored in a small fridge and they package it with an ice pack before I leave the premises...

I'd say to shop around a bit and at the big private hospitals where things are stored properly and with air conditioning but are usually quite a bit more expensive...

Never buy from non-a/c pharmacies. Even upcountry, there are many with a/c. they also tend to be larger and are more likely to have an actual pharmacist behind the counter.

I don't understand the original title however as "ethically" implies some dishonesty whereas what you describe is poor storage conditions. Title edited accordingly.

Thanks Sheryl.

Not familiar with a/c abbreviation?

I chose the word ëthical" as poor storage practices of pharmaceuticals under the management of trained pharmacists is not only improper, it's both negligent and unethical.

That a Pharmacy in Thailand can operate without the management of a pharmacist is something I was unaware of.

I only buy from pharmacys with cold air cond.
