What Do You Want To See Or Do Before You Go?

Featured Replies

I hope I've got a fair bit of time left, so maybe more than one thing however!! Before I go I want to......

Take the longest train ride in the world, Thurso Northern Scotland, England, Channel Tunnel, France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Belarus, St Petersburg, Moscow, Trans Siberian Express, Beijing, Great Wall, Shanghai, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Penang, Singapore.

Hopping on and off as I go along.

What's your thing to do before you go?

That would be an interesting train journey. I like trains myself and will often take them despite them being a longer journey from A to B.

I wanna do a world trip again with my new wifey.

Yes, I could do that easily, love trains.

Did 2 months travelling around the continent back in '58.

Amazing time was enjoyed then, dunno about now tho'.

I am a little older....LOL

I fancy tracking ( forgive the pun ) the history as I go along, as well as the other sights.

As a Scotsman, we had a lot of people removed from the Sutherland Highlands during the Highland Clearances, that's where the journey begins.

Heading down the East Coast through Edinburgh, and on to York, where the old Romano city was the site for the Treaty of York 1237, that created the lands we no recognize as Scotland and England, down to Londinium, over to see where Lord Lovat landed with his personal Piper on D-Day, up to see where the Russian Imperial Navy was founded, by would you believe, a Scotsman, into Beijing to see Eric Liddel school ( the Chariots of Fire runner became a missionary in China and died in a Japanese prison camp in 1944 ), then finishing off where my Uncle and many other Scots were captured in Singapore.

I'm not obsessed with the Scottish element though, I want to see how landscapes and peoples change gradually, and to see the best of history and humanity. I think by train is the best way to do it.

A month long flight across the top of Oz...east to west....stop at all my fav spots....with the kids and the missus if she behaves....swags in the boot and enough tucker to still allow lift off in tight spots.

I bet there is a few guys that would just love to see their toes again.

If you mean the Orient Express I'd advise against it. I used to work for the bloke that owned it. He also owned a shipping company. We sat and waited in Port Philip Bay for 13 weeks until he turned up (in person) to pay for our bunkers. Mind you he did throw a monster party afterwards.

Travel on horseback across the length of the Pyrenees

No seriously - About 20 years ago I owned a mountain barn high in the Pyrenee mountains. I would spend my daytime time hiking and climbing the peaks, and then spend my evenings gourging on beautiful French cuisine and wines.

Then the kids came along and I sold the barn....

I've always aspired to find the location of the legendary oomedoodle bird. I wuld like to build a hide, film them landing, and post the clips on Bedlam.

Trans Siberian Express for me, one of my greatest wishes. Again stopping off as and when.

The Glacier Express, Switzerland

Eastern & Oriental Express

The Shinkansen Japan..( loved the Bullet train )

Bhutan

Bora Bora

In peaceful times, would have loved to have come over to Australia over land.

Latin America /

Chichen Itza Mexico

Yosemite National Park

That will do for now!

I would like to see the winning Lottery ticket in my sweaty palm.............

I did that. One of the more memorable times in my life.

I think I have posted a few pics in this forum, in the Aussie thread.

  1. I'd love to just once before I go hear these words from my wife. "you know darling, it seems you were right all along".

Were that ever to happen however, the shock might speed my demise.

Dreaming the impossible dream, eh?

he was in his late 20s and I was broken down and drunk in my mid 50s with no hope and he didn't know what he was doin'...

just put me out in the line up with the right equipment an' I'll show him...

I just looked for them. It appears they have been archived.

Four seater Piper Cherokee/Warrior - took three weeks flying around Australia - everywhere except Qld, Tassie and NSW.

So you only missed 3 of the 7 states...forget Canberra....missing the majority of the east coast is really not flying 'around' australia now is it ??

If I get around to it...it will be in a Jetranger...cannot land a little plane anywhere you want.

hey...sharks are your friends, along with the sea otters (cute little buggers) and the harbor seals ('croak!') but mr shark would come and try to eat them and could at times be disruptive...I'd just sit on my board out in the line up and say hello...

I even saw a grey whale once with her calf during the annual west coast migration (whoosh!) about 50m away...memorable...

  • 3 weeks later...

My dream would be travelling all South Asia on a good motorbike, with a couple of trusted friends, and write a couple of books about the hilltribes.

I am afraid that in a couple of decades some very ancient culture might disappear forever.

I have an established bucket-list. Some things ticked off already.

Here are a few yet to be acheived.

-Japan.

-A proper family get-together (at least with the ones i term as family). They are dispersed all over.

-A beautiful sun-set, dining by a beach, listening to the sound of the sea, where i drink white wine and dine on lobster with the person i love.

-Viewing underwater life, via scuba diving

-..and some kind of awesome motorbike tour..not sure where..

For me its swimming in a freshwater waterfall plummeting into the ocean. Jimmy Buffet talks about one in his book "A Pirate Looks at Fifty".

Before I go, I always check there's enough paper..............

I've still a few places left on the "Bucket List", Gaudi's Barcelona is probably up there near the top.
