Has the potential to be the best at, floods that could and should have been controlled, Tuk Tuk scams, Beggar scams, knifed tourists, and a government that talks to much and walks to little. This is just more talk for the masses that don't understand.

To find a perfect microcosm of Thailand and the country's problems, just look to Phuket: a beautiful island which, a little more than a decade ago, was poised to become a yachting and resort mecca. Now years of mismanagement and corruption have turned the island into a crime bonanza and the yachting world has moved on to greener pastures...never to return. The best part about this is that Thailand and Thais haven't even noticed. They're still trying to plug their little crime-infested paradise as if it really were heaven on earth.

Precisely.

It started with Pattaya, now Phuket and next I can see Samui and then Hua Hin which will cause a few ripples.

I can only say to Associate director Tony Picon Colliers International Thailand that he is wearing blinkersrolleyes.gif

Whatever infrastructure Myanmar may lack compared to Thailand will be more than compensated by the energy, enthusiasm and far superior level of education and English speaking skills possessed by the young people of Myanmar compared to the " think only inside the box " mentality in Thailand whistling.gif

keep dreaming Mr Picon !

Seems thailand has forgot about that little country to the north called china who have an excellent track record of exporting construction projects to garner favor amongst foreign countries in exchange for resources.

China is far from Burma.

You need to travel all the way to Singapore, make a U turn and all the way back to reach Burma.

However, Thailand is just next door, and have land border access.

Oh boy!!!! China could build a highway to Burma, before this place could build a hotel !!!!!

.Other options instead of nuclear power include increases in liquefied natural gas imports and power purchases from neighbouring countries, along with more intensive development of small power producers and renewable energy

Link

well, if neighbouring countries, such as burma, are increasing their national demand,

they will not have capacities, to sell it to thailand.

Thailand poised to be hub for countries left behind as Myanmar takes over south east asia as #1 tourist destination

Vietnam has already taken 40% of tourists who USED TO come here....but no one has told them.

Myanmar will get the others.

Thailand already has many hubs going so they have experience:

1. The hub of corruption

2. The hub of useless police

3. The hub of useless government

4. The hub of useless public information

5. The hub of flood prevention

With all this hub experience of course Thailand is poised to be the hub of Burma investor expansion.

Good points. Why is it that every place in Thailand infested with farangs inevitably turns into a massive sh*thole? Maybe someday, Myanmar can attract enough foreigners to have their own sh*thole(s).

Lots of hubs going nowhere in Thailand. When are they going to build the spokes, wheels and the rest of the wagon to go along with all those hubs, and start moving in some useful direction?

Looking at Thai "infrastructure“, who with a little common sense would ask Thailand’s experts for their expertise when you have to start from scratch? I recommend the Burmese come over here and learn how to avoid making the same mistakes.

If Myanmar doesn't control prostitution and organized crime. They will.

Did you go to school ?Are you being sarcastic or do you really think that China is far from Burma ? China and Burma also share a land border, and it's a lot longer than the border with Vietnam or Cambodia. And why are you mentioning Singapore ?

The port of Yangon is the premier port of Myanmar and handled 90% of the country's exports and imports. coffee1.gif

Hmmm..... China has already build several bridges, that see thousands of vehicles daily; EACH.

Or... they just will bypass Thailand, root down in Yangoon, and deal with Burma the way investors usually deal with poor countries. The way they once dealt with Thailand.

I think the moral of that story is, avoid trendy tourist beach destinations.

Thailand is a beautiful place, it just seems the sh*t bag scammers and crime bosses are mostly attracted to salt water. Like sharks.

It always pleases me to hear that Thailand believes they are legends in their own minds.

They remind me collectively a the song by Jackson Browne called the "The Pretender."

... this 'hub' too shall pass.

... it surprises me that the Thai media and Thai officials haven't a clue as to how moronic their continual claim to 'hub' status sounds to non-Thais ... 'Thailand, hub of [fill in the blank] is now a sure fire set-up for an insulting punch line.

is it not time for THAILAND to change their rules? so rich Thais will buy up everything (land, etc...) from their neighboor to make big speculations and earn lot's of money, but farangs with family here living 5, 10, 20 years + cannot even own 1 rai of THAIland

These are the rules that work for Thai and are bad for Farang and that's how this country likes it. Why would they want to change them? It's stupid Farang who go play by them instead of changing THEIR rules for the Thai. But they don't in the name of "niceness" and "political correctness". Real stupid.

chotthee - I suggest you buy both a modern map and several from past centuries, then also read up on traditional trade routes, because what you said is pure rubbish unless you are talking only about deep ocean vessels. China and Burma have a very long shared border, and several millennia-old trade routes cross it. As do several proposed and existing road and rail routes for modern traffic. It's long been known China has been assisting Burma because China wants the use of Indian Ocean ports on the south west Burmese coast.

The land is being preserved for future generations. WHOSE future generations is never made clear. Just be sure its not YOURS, even if your family is Thai.

haha!! yes! good point exactly!!

the government makes such a BIG thing about preserving the LAND for future generations.. (and trying to avoid ownership by foreigners)..

and now they are happy to contradict themselves and sell land to foreigners who want to make their base in Thailand (as supposed to Burma).

anyway,, who said that thailands infrastructure was so good anyway? - then again, its the best of what is available in the region... (except for singapore, hong kong, taiwan and china)
