OK - So I have a non imm B with a month left. I was supposed to be getting my work permit sorted out, but never got around to it for various reasons. Earliest I can apply for work permit is 21st.

Questions;

  1. Will I have time to do the work permit if applied on 21st (soonest I can do it) prior to non imm b running out?
  2. Can I go to immigration and get an extension to the non imm B at immigration here in Bangkok or do I have to go abroad again?
  3. If I go abroad again to KL, would it be easier to get once I have the work permit or should I postpone the work permit prior to getting the new Non Imm b?
  4. I assume prior to getting a 1 yr visa I need more than 18 months left on my pass port - is this true?

I can't change the date of the 21st for various reasons and the Non Imm B runs out on the 10th.

Help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Today is the 10th. Do you mean August by chance?

Yes you will need 18 months on passport to obtain a one year visa (if they will even issue) - most people, if able, extend at immigration for work after obtaining work permit so only need single entry.

1. That depends upon the office where you apply. One I understand is normal but can take longer.

2. You could get a 7 day extension at immigration.

3. If you have the work permit and documentation from company the you could get a multiple entry B.

4. You need a least one year to get visa.

Does the company qualify for you getting a one year extension at immigration? If you got that you would not need to leave the country.

The biggest problem you have is only having one page in passport. For a trip out and back would not be enough unless you have some partial pages available for the departure and entry stamps.

NonImm B expires on 7th August having just checked.

I have a fair amount of partial pages left (Malaysia immigration are the culprits of always looking for an empty page and dumping their stamp on it. Passport expires in May 2013 and the website from KL embassy says need 6 months + so that is ok. Can only get 7 days at Immigartion though.

I have one clear page for the visa, but will the work department people fill that up with crap though? I suppose that is the key question. I looked at around the time I last had a WP issued and there is a whole page of stuff. I am pretty sure this is immigration though and not work permit related.

My thoughts based on the above is;

1) Get work permit applied for (unless they do want to fill up the page).

2) Apply for non imm b in KL again for 3 months,

3) go to UK, get new passport, getting exit stamp for non imm b on the way out.

4) Come back and go to immigration to get all the stamps switched over.

5) Wait for it to be filled up again (will get the big one this time).

If they are going to fill up the passport though with WP stuff, is there generally a problem getting back to back Non Imm B visas for 3 months?

The requirement is 6 months for single entry and 18 months validity for multi entry visa issue per MFA - this is really not logical as a visa is still valid in an expired passport so really no need for such a rule.

Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months. The validity of 18 months is required for one year visa application.

If you go to KL with no WP, the Non B is 90 Day Single Entry so you would need to get a Rentry Permit to preserve it on leaving Thailand for the UK.

What would make more sense is to apply for the WP, make a trip to the UK and get a One Year Multiple Entry Non B at Hull then come back, pick up the WP and off you go.

If you are sure of a subsequent one year extension and want to go to KL for a single entry 90 day non B then I have had the same situation as you and I 'hid' the blank page using several paper clips - if the customs official starts removing the clips it gives you time to plead your case for the blank page.

Once you finally get your Extension you can apply to HK for a new Passport and will get the balance of the one year extension when you present your new passport to immigration for the extension stamp to be transfered.

Remember if you go down the 7 day extension route that Immigration will use up half a page for this stamp and you then need two half pages for a one year 777/2551 Section 2.1 Extension.

Your WP will probably not be ready in time, so a Section 2.1 One Year Extension before Aug 7th may be a 'Bridge Too Far.'
