a friend of mine (Canadian national) is visiting Myanmar for a couple days...anyone knows if he needs a visa, if so what type and where to get it? And how long?

Yes, your Canadian friend needs a visa. He or she can obtain it easily at any Myanmar embassy. The embassy in Bangkok is quite popular for this.

A tourist visa might be the right type, depending on what your friend intends to visit the country for.

...while living in Chiang Rai.....we would just fill out the forms at the border....no embassy needed....but please verify...

I believe what you get is a border pass which will allow you to stay within a number of kilometers from the border check-point, not a visa with which you can travel freely within Myanmar (for example to Yangon). Kindly check.
