PATTAYA:--Police recently set up a midnight checkpoint in south Pattaya to test a new hi-tech car equipped with an “X-ray” device that can scan automobiles for illegal items. But no contraband was found after two hours of randomly scanning vehicles.

PATTAYA – July 28, 2012 [PDN]; At 12:15 a.m., A police checkpoint was set up in Pattaya by Pol. Col. Pisit Proyroongroj, Deputy Commander, Chonburi province; together with Pol. Col. Panthana Nuchanart, Superintendent, Pattaya police station; Pol. Lt. Col. Kierttisak Sathongoy, Deputy Superintendent; who together mobilized the forces of the Pattaya police team, the detection police of Chonburi province, and the drug suppression division police.

The checkpoint was set up to inspect passing vehicles and make arrests for any illegal items. Police were stationed at the intersection of Soi 12 and second Pattaya road, Moo 9, Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province.

For the first time in Chonburi, the police used a new hi-tech automobile “used to X-ray for weapons and illegal items.” Both motorbikes and cars were randomly stopped. Motorbikes were visually inspected as usual.

And it comes from the same firm that delivered the GT bomb scanners to Thailand. The technology really works...... In the end it is just showing off stuff to tourists. What did the police expect to find? Everything that is illegal is controlled by the Pattaya police itself.

You can find these vehicles all over the world, needs a heavy duty vehicle with upgraded suspension and battery system. They are Mobile BackScatter X-ray's notoriously inept and inconclusive - the vehicle needs to be really close to the vehicle it is scanning for a good Image, and even it it was riding along side of it on a highway, they would have to be going so slow or there will be nothing but a "Bluuuuurrrrrrr" will not detect bombs, weapons, drugs by scanning alone, you may be able to see them IF the vehicle was parked and right along side of the scanner................http://www.as-e.com/products_solutions/zbv.asp Of coursed the companies say these are the best thing since sliced bread, if they were so effective, why didn't we have them in Iraq???thumbsup.gif

By the pictures it seems that they don't bother to hide the people from the harmful rays... lovely.

Free X-Rays, anyone?

It's not really a x-ray (same as your doc.) these trucks use Gamma Radiation. The truck on the picture is a : Z BACKSCATTER VAN (ZBV). made by AS&E

The equipment does work, but only if used correctly - in this case it wasn't and the operators clearly have no idea what they are doing:

suspicious looking cars were directed to park along the roadside. When about 10 cars were parked, the people inside were ordered to get out of their vehicles. The officers then drove the hi-tech car past the vehicles to scan the parked cars with the X-ray device.

An X-ray screen in the hi-tech car allowed police to see if any illegal items such as guns or drugs were concealed in the vehicles.

The equipment is "mobile" in that it is designed to be easily moved from one location to another, not used on the move. It needs at least 15 seconds to scan any car, which needs to be static beside the van - using it like this may be a deterrent, but they may just as well use an empty van with a policeman watching his favourite DVD and pretend that its a backscanner.

The problem with using them in Iraq or Afghanistan is that although the scanner can be monitored from some distance away they are an ideal target for a car bomb/shaped charge - drive up, get out (as you would be asked to do), walk away, press the remote, and carry on walking in the confusion. A car bomber's dream target.
