Disapointed With Asus Motherboard, Anyone Else ?

I just bought an Asus K8N motherboard a few days ago in Panthip Chiangmai. Yesterday I get my connection to the net (Maxnet home working), but just after an intensive 12 hours of use (new Archlinux ftp install and surfing) my connection fall down. :o

I thougt first that the cheap router Maxnet gave me was faulty (Billion ADSL router), but in fact it was the integrated Nforce LAN chipset of the motherboard. So I've installed a classic Realtek RTL8139 and everything is ok now. :D

Am I juste unlucky or do anyone else encounter the same problem ?

Generally Asus is among the best, in terms of quality and features. However, you will also find lemons in the lot... I've usually used Asus mainboards, and so far I've had relatively few problems. If your mainboard is still in warranty, you should have it checked and replaced.

hi'

I have always consired Asus as one of the top brand for MB, but have to say that I have seen recently some ethernet slot failed, and not only on Asus MB,

2 on MB on Dell PC, and one on an Asus MB for AMD :o:D

imho, the gigabyte ethernet connection on MB is the best choice, just check wich one comes with the MB ...

I'll upgrade soon, still don't know which one to take a gigabyte or an Asus ...

but as Firefox said change it, it's under guaranty still :D

I've had quite a few on-board LAN's fail on me, from many brands, not just Asus!

Seems for some reason the on-board versions are more vulnerable to failure then the plug-in PCI types.

Easy to remedy with an extra pci card though...

I recall the "good ol' days", when most proffesionals would shy away from anything on-board, and just stick with seperate cards for whatever you need (lan, modem, vga,...)

The current trend seems to be to include pretty much everything on the mainboard, appart from maybe high performance graphics...

You absolutely sure about that? You've installed the very latest drivers for that MB etc.?

I love ASUS and it's rare that a new ASUS MB would have a problem. If it is indeed defective then you should be able to return it for another w/ no problem.

Yes, I'm unfortunately very sure that the chipset die. I have a dualboot (Archlinux - WinXP) system, installed the driver provided on the CD for WinXP and the module "forcedeth" from the latest available kernel (2.6.15-2-archck) for Archlinux and it was running fine.

Then suddenly I was unable to access the net on both systems though I had downloaded many MB during the previous 12hours during Arch ftp install. I've then tried to change the router with a similar model and also another one provided by a friend without success. I've also tried a LiveCD (Elive) in case, but same same. As soon as I used the Realtek PCI Lan card I could reach the network without any problem.

I had two Asus MB (a7n8x-Deluxe) before who were working good, but as they don't have Sata support I had to change. On another PC I mounted a Gygabite mobo and I'm very satisfied with it.

No problem I'll return it to the shop, but I'm lazy now to remove all the stuff in the PC. :o

All I buy for our facility are ASUS mainboards (probably over a hundred of them) and never had a problem but with one where the onboard LAN failed. Could be a voltage surge got into the line somehow, so you should get it replaced while the warranty is still valid.

I have 5 Asus motherboards ( A7S333 ) they all suffer from loose ram and Agp slots

but are still are the most stable and reliable mobos I've had..........

as compared to Gigabyte.

I'll buy Asus from now on.

Yep, I got the same problem with my A7V8X
