One thing i notice a lot with general Aussie accents is statements become questions.

ie:

I really like chocolate?

blink.png

Edit: As an aside though, most Aussie terminology for things, is same as Brit terminology. That video is more for Americans, so doesnt matter, cuz American English is just plain weird tongue.png

Edit 2: Also pronunciation is pretty much the same too in general. IE: Scone = Scohn, not Scowhn. Aff Americans, why did you have to go screwing around with perfectly good normal English!!

Edit 3: Words that should be omitted from general conversations are useless filler words, such as "Like" and "Stuff". No..just NO! NOOOO!!!

Random statements: that is probably just a sign of Aspergers. Most Australians have it.

Don't be worried if someone asks you for a fag.

Thongs are worn on your feet.

An absolute must eat is Chilli Morton Bay Bugs which should be on the menu everywhere.

Keep an eye on your wallet, we have that whole heritage thing ...

I think ill be lucky in that im going to be reasonably cushioned. As in, no hotel fees (maybe one or two nights at Gold Coast, but thats it). Cab = Boyfriend lol...so no cabby frights. Dont plan on goin out for fancy dinners, and arent night owls much. So... fairly cheap! Daytime trips around is the plan: Mount Glorious, Mount Cootha, national parks, dirk bike riding, trails, mountain climbing. I'll source out some Art Galleries (bf might not be up for that, but maybe can drag him in for some Art exposure ^^^ (if he squirms too much, he can go do something else instead and will meet up later..lol)). In the evening, cooking ourselves, or just gorging on some good wine, chocolate and cheeses. Plan to make Fondue too, as having access to so much good (and better priced) cheese is going to be fantastic! So yeh. Its really more of a trip to spend time together, than a holiday splurge, as wont see him for another 3 1/2 months again after that. sad.png

I understand that sentiment eek.

Enjoy every moment!

And in Oz it makes perfect sense to respond to a comment with "Yeah, no". blink.png

Some explanations of word differences

!

Ummm...is it part of typical Australian speech to talk like you're gay?

And Eek have a safe and wonderful time in Australia!!!

have you packed yet eek?? smile.png

And be careful what you pack. Australian Customs are very strict about what can be taken in. If you're carrying any food, declare it. I think they've also recently tightened up on how much liquor and tobacco you can take in.

This page might be worth a look. http://www.customs.g...te/page4351.asp

I've taken school groups to Australia several times and have had no problems as long as the students and teachers have declared food, wooden items, etc. Everything has been allowed in except 3 in 1 coffee, a belt made from seashells, and some Mama noodles with meat (with shrimp is OK).

Customs officials have always been polite and pleasant, as we've been open with them, but the first Thai group caused a bit of anxiety, as they thought if some of them declared their Mama noodles the rest didn't have to. blink.png We were warned politely not to do it again, but they allowed everyone's noodles in. biggrin.png

What's the deal with 3 in 1 coffee?

They found that 3in1s made in Thailand were using an ingredient that was the same as was used in the formula that killed so many babies in China a few years ago. We were told that 3in1s from Singapore were OK to bring in, but not from Thailand. We had to surrender ours, and our daughter had to do the same a year or two later. I'm not sure if you can now get them in Australia now, but you couldn't up to recently.

Ah, 3in1s ... the smell of plastic coffee in the morning. coffee1.gif

Absolutely.

Wouldn't let my daughter take in Milo in the tetra packs. Dairy product.

Yes it is. And yes most are.

Oy!! Sometimes we talk like this.

I hope you have a great holiday. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for our ozzie cousins. They are rather ruggedly handsome in a sort of way.

Plenty of snakes up there on the Gold Coast also...

We always used to keep a rolled up newspaper in the dunny for just such eventualities. No crapping in the dark either w00t.gif

Making a mental note to wake my significant other before I go to the loo when we're in Oz......polite to let her go first isn't it? The joys of being British....tongue.png

Speaking of Taipan's, my parents did a stretch in central Qld many years ago, and my mother was on the dunny when she realised there was a Taipan curled up in the corner staring at her. She stared back, scared stiff. This went on for about two hours until the snake decided it had had enough and moved behind the washing machine.

Needless to say my mother didn't need to go to the dunny again for quite some time.

Im hardcore. Spent 90% of the time in a caravan going in a hole in the great outdoors. Made Thai squat toilets look like luxury ;P

Still sorting through the photos and vids.

Had a jogging encounter with a kangaroo.

At a clothing superstore, realised i was looking in the teenage section (used to thai style and sizes).

Had a couple of days at Mermaid beach, gold coast.

Had a lot of fun with nature.

Took outside showers.

and ate copious amounts of cheese and chocolates, with tons of red wine.
