first your car must be paid for, then get a passport for your car,its good for one year, thinks it about BT200.

if you owe any money on your car,you can't take it of country.that way you can't sell it out of country.

oh yea, you or your wife has to own the car(name on registry paper)

For Malaysia you dont need the car passport. That is for going to Laos.

What you do need to do is get the number plate rego romanised at your local land transport department. You will need your ownership book for this and they will issue you a letter with the Thai plate in roman script.

When you leave Thailand you just drive out.

On entering Malaysia you need to buy insurance and pay road tax, which is when you need to show the letter from the DLT.

You will then be issued with a tax sticker, and the insurance agent should organise for romanised plates (stickers actually) placed on your front and back bumpers.

The DLT stuff in Thailand is cheap as chips. Less that 100 baht for the letter.

On the Malaysian side, a thousand baht or so from memory should get you everything. You'll also need a bit of ringit for their toll roads which criss cross the country and are hard to avoid.

You have to pay a toll for the first part of the tollway when you go through immigration so you will need ringgit as soon as you enter Malaysia. When you enter Malaysia with your car they will also check the tint on your windows, if it is too dark it will have to come off. Other than that it is easy, blue book and latter from the land transport office. Do not buy insurance in Thailand before you go, waste of time. Buy it on the other side as suggested and they will do your number plate stickers too, you need to do this before you go to the Malaysian Transport office right next door.

The DLT letter is a translation of the blue book, request it in the morning done in the afternoon, 25 or 30B.

If the the car is not in your name, u will need a letter from the owner to allow u to drive the car into Malaysia.

Thats all u need to leave Thailand...and of course the blue book

After clearing the Thai and Malaysian immigration, drive a little further to make a U-turn ,u will see a small Malaysian Road Transportation Department office. Next to it there is a small shopping mall theer are two insurance agencies where u can get the insurance( was 700B for Toyota Fortuner) and romanised number plates (80B). The Malaysian permit is free, it's just another sticker. U may get a warning or the heavy window tinting may have to come out. The office and the shops are not open 24 hrs.

I want to drive to Malaysia next week. Today I got the Vehicle Inspection Certificate from the DLT already. It costs 75 baht, but in order to get it I first had to have my address verified by the Department of Immigration, and that cost 500 baht.

The Vehicle Inspection Certificate is valid until the day that my road tax certificate expires, which in my case is the 11th of February 2013

Now my question: Does anyone have a recent experience in crossing the border at Sungai Kolok, near Kota Bharu? I
