Btw, I have been there yesterday and the new TIGER has opened already opposite of the old one... I wondered a little bit how it could be happen so fast, just one burned and a new one is build almost imidiately on the other side of Bangla Road where is normally not much space left....

Another thing I wondered yesterday a little bit, may be some of the members here can explain whats going on there in Patong.

A friend of mine ownes a Restaurant and was picked up one sunny day by the Authorities for working without a work permit... he was writing something in german on his menu black board outside the Restaurant... finally it costs him around 200k for working without a proper license...

I saw a lot of ladies dancing in glass boxes yesterday in soi Bangla...since they where very obviously not Thai but Russian i wonder if somebody will explain while it is allowed to them to dance/work there... some other Russian girls in their mid 20 walking the streets with signs and pricetables.... I learned once that it is forbidden for Farang to work any kind of work in Thailand a Thai can do... has this law changed already and can I start working tomorrow too? May be I am planning a dancing career too

I've already asked the question ref the western ladies of the night and according to the labour office in Phuket Town ....are u ready ???? They all have work permits and their job titles are " actresses " no BS it was a legal and correct reply to the question .....now that's funny...

WOW Sharp, thats a good and helpfull answer, THANKS A LOT ... so I got a new idea, instead of a dancer I will apply for a work permit as an actor... I mean thats really clever, with this one you can work nearly everything...even as a waiter or tuk tuk driver....cleaning the streets or act like a security guard... Nice. Thx - my point being the punishment certainly does not fit the crime. I was sadly privy to the photos of the kids who died at Santika, what appeared to be sleeping, all bald, their clothes completely gone, both burned away and all on the floor leaning against the wall where they were asphyxiated. No - Google did not show that. And if the prosecution is anything like Bangkok, it will be the same. And the payoffs so far from Tiger in my opinion is trying to buy silence.

Not on a witch hunt, but do you know what google is ?

Thai nightclub owner charged over deadly blaze

BANGKOK, Oct 3, 2012 (AFP) - Thai police have charged a nightclub owner with gross negligence over a fire that killed four people, including two foreigners, on the holiday island of Phuket, an official said Wednesday.

If convicted, Tiger Group owner Piya Isramalai faces up to 10 years in prison for the pre-dawn blaze that swept through the Tiger Discotheque on August 17 on the southern island, a magnet for international tourists.

Piya is also accused of operating a business outside legal opening hours.

"He was officially charged last week after he surrendered to police," said Phuket police investigator Lieutenant Colonel Kittipong Klaikaeo.

He said the case file would soon be submitted to prosecutors.

A British and a French tourist, as well as two Thai women, died in the fire, which is believed to have spread rapidly because flammable materials were used in the construction and decoration of the nightclub.

Eleven other people were injured during the incident, which occurred during a thunderstorm.

Police believe an electrical malfunction caused the blaze, Kittipong said.

The fire was another blow to Thailand's image as the "Land of Smiles" that has been tarnished in recent years by deadly political unrest, devastating floods, and concerns about violent crimes against foreigners.

Safety standards in the kingdom are generally poor and deaths involving tourists are common.

Last year the owner of a Bangkok nightclub where more than 60 people died in a 2009 blaze was sentenced to three years in prison for gross negligence.

No, not really IMO. Tiger has been very good in taking care of the victims, with for Thai perspective very high payments.

Ya but you said it would all cease to exist, not that your point was that the punishment did not fit the crime. You made it sound like they just paid money and got off free, when those found responsible actually physically were put in jail. You gotta be more clear if that was your point, but it just looks like you are backtracking.

You may have not liked the length of the sentence, but they did actually go to jail and there was some semblance of justice. It's not like it was first degree murder and of course they would have never wished anyone to die, either, even if Santika was dangerously negligent.

In fact, it may not fit the idea of "Thailand is corrupt and you can buy your way out of everything in this '3rd world country'" which it sounds like was the tenor of your first post, but in the Santika case the penalty was more severe than a very similar nightclub fire case in Rhode Island in the U.S.A. where even more people died. The owner, in that case, did less than 2 years in jail.

So, ya, Thailand's corrupt and there is no justice when tea money is paid.

But not always.

So I think you could just say, "Yeah I got it wrong. My first post was wrong." Rather than trying to say you were saying something that you weren't.

its not uncommon for nightclubs to lock the doors. Its called a lockin which in reality means outsiders ( police etc) are locked out. They are locked out to enable after hours drinking etc.

As for building inspectors. Its more a question of slow updating of the law. For example most roofes in Thailand are made from the universally banned asbestos tiles. The Thai government when urged to bann the use of this product agreed to discuss it. Taiwan in comparison has banned new use after 2020!!

There are few places, the connections and the money are more protective, I think.

Also:66 death toll is a much different number of attention.

In Phuket it was only an accident, because the Owner of the disco let people hide before the rain!

With 'only' two western people in Tiger (R.i.P.), the international attention isn't that big, anymore. Only the Expats are still following this subject. For others it's almost only a 'oh yes, there was something. Where to go, today? Let's try the new Tiger'!

Ok first thing first: new tiger has been built quite a while already and was supposed to go open last december. However they delayed it due to...lack of tourists?, or maybe something else, but one tiger club was enough... When the old one burned, it was quite easy to get the new one up and running. Personally I first thought it was an insurance scam to get extra money from a building that would eventually be taken down, but unfortunately it was a real thing where people died... I actually passed it at 3 am just before the heavy rains and yes it seemed packed up there.

About your friend... Well do like we HAVE to do, and get a bloody work permit... Me and my wife both have one in my business, as required by the Thai law... Yes its not cheap, but if you cant afford it, then you should change business!

And about the Russian girls... Well you answered that question already. Have you seen ONE Thai woman who can actually pole dance in this country??? Rotating your ass clockwise at a speed of 20 RPM looking all bored holding the bar with your two hands and not even moving your feet is NOT I repeat NOT pole dancing. It is actually not an easy thing to be a good professional pole dancer. You have to take schooling and years of practice to be able to support your body with just your toes and a knee... These are acrobats! And no Thais definately cant do that!!! The ones in the street, well, they speak Russian, which again is something hard to find with Thais... But yes officially there should also be a Thai person accompanying them with the sign they hold.

And my personal favorite excuse is: they got PINK nipples and not brown ones... Now that is definately something Thais cant do, although I dont think that excuse will be valid on a WP3 form (work permit application form)

If girls dont have it inside to dance, they will never learn it...may be thats why most of the girls i see dancing in the USA was black

I grew up in BKK and yes in soi 23 you have some good dancers but limited to less than 1 percent of all the girls. The longgun has a good show, but all the rest is just boring. Even in the Baccara where there are over 100 girls I think there isnt a single one dancing show style..

Oh and I am from Belgium, just in case you wanted that answered too..

And YES there are schools for that. Its called dance schools, and pole dancing on a professional level has some acrobatics in there as well. Try hanging horizontally by your knee and toes close to the ceiling while rotating around... Quite impressive actually. How much clothes you are wearing during the process is maybe the difference between the class practice and the stage practice.
