LAMPANG, Oct 20— A regional disaster prevention and mitigation office has set up a centre to help cold snap-affected residents in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son and to brace for approaching cold weather.

Prajon Pratsakul, director of the 10th region disaster prevention and mitigation office in Lampang, on Saturday said that the agency has opened a special operation centre to brace for cold weather which began prevailing over some northern provinces and was likely to affect residents, particularly those living in remote and mountainous areas.

The centre mainly provides assistance for residents in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son.

In a related development, the Lampang weather bureau reported that the temperatures there were at 21 degrees Celsius this morning.

The cooler weather will likely continue to drop by about 2-3 degrees Celsius from Oct 23-25, said bureau chief Tiwa Phanmaisee.

He explained that the high pressure from China was forecast to cover Upper Thailand. Rain was expected to cover the region in the beginning and then the high pressure will bring cooler temperatures.

Centre to be established to tackle cold spell in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, Oct 24— Chiang Mai governor Tanin Subhasaen on Wednesday instructed the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office to set up a centre to brace for impact of approaching cold weather.

The operation centre is aimed at tackling and monitoring a cold snap which is expected to prevail over the province in the near future as well as providing assistance to residents.

In addition, Mr Tanin urged officials in all districts to survey local people who might be affected by the coming cold spell, particularly those living in remote and mountainous areas, in order to map out an operation plan to deal with related problems and to prepare distribution of warm clothing and blankets.

At least 300,000 Chiang Mai residents are impacted by cold weather each year, the governor said, adding that it was forecast this year would be cooler than last year. (MCOT online news)
