Hi, I'm heading out to Phuket on Friday and wondered if anyone has had any experience of any good camps in phuket.

I've got all the websites for phuket, and so far I think I'm liking the look of the gym at Suwit (bestmuaythai.com).

Main things I'm after ios :-

1. A camp that has active fighters.

2. Not a tourist orientated camp.

Not too worried about speaking english just a real thai oreintated camp, if anyone has actual expereince of the camps out ther would be much appreciated. :o

You may have to look hard for a non-touristy camp in Phuket. There are plenty of authentic camps around the country. Check out www.muaythai2000.com, click on the UK flag icon, then look for "Camps In Thailand". Just select the part of the country you're interested in and go from there. Many of the numbers/addresses are incorrect so it's real hit and miss. Get a Thai friend to make some calls for you and be sure to check if they will take a farang as some camps deal only with local boxers. Good luck!

I would say Phuket is nice for the beaches.

For serious Muay Thai I think you will do better at one of the bkk gyms that has the odd farang coming through (so they know your weaknesses and things you probably have to work on, plus your strengths) and also they know how to explain what you need to do a bit.

Not too far away from a movie theatre or whatever, but if you are coming here for serious training then you'll need a cheap apartment near the gym, and you will be knackered most of the time.

I've met a FEW very few serious westerners, and they train as hard or harder than the Thais in the gym - Phuket Samui etc is for the look good wear the gears, still go out for beers brigade I think.

I once contacted the Muay Thai assocation on behalf of some friend, and was recommended a gym in Lard Prao soi 128; went there myself a training session after a 6 year break from any training at all....they train hard; good instruction and advice....

Was that Sasripapa Gym? This gym is on Ladprao Soi 130 and is run by a guy named Takoon Pongsupa. It has been around for ages and was the place that housed/trained one of my first Muay coaches. I'm not sure of the prices but they should charge less than some of the more upscale/modern gyms.

Hey Muay_thai2, are you there yet, how do you like it? I'm gonna go next week, to the one in Southern Phuket, Rawai Muay Thai, reason I picked it, has active fighters, good website, reply to emails and the location is great, not far from a good hotel and great beach (Nai Harn beach)

Boxing, kickbox, muaithai,..whatever is a complete joke in phuket, i recall a guy training in large gym located in bangla road claiming to be once thai champion, and found later him & rest of gangs working as a bouncers in tiger disco later each evening, Ridiculious :o
