PHUKET: -- Police are offering a 100,000-baht reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the man who robbed a Kasikornbank (KBank) branch on the north side of Phuket Town yesterday.

The robber escaped with an estimated 2.7 million baht.

Police believe the man received “inside assistance” in carrying out the robbery and are now questioning six suspects for information related to the armed theft, Phuket Provincial Police Commander Choti Chavaviwat revealed last night.

All six suspects either work for the bank, a related organization or are former employees of the bank, Maj Gen Choti said before going into a meeting to discuss investigation strategies with his deputy commanders and local superintendents at 10pm.

However, Gen Choti did not specify whether or not police believe the robber worked for the branch that was robbed, which opened on January 19 this year, or any other KBank branch.

“We have questioned witnesses and reviewed the bank’s CCTV footage, and I have ordered inspectors to follow the six suspects closely.

“The robber parked his motorbike in front of the bank and waited for about 20 minutes before going in and committing the crime,” Gen Choti said.

“As the robber’s face was covered by a full-face helmet, I would like to ask for the cooperation of the public. If anyone believes they have any information about the suspect, please let us know. We are offering a reward of 100,000 baht for anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the suspect,” he explained.

Information may be called in to the Phuket Provincial Police (076-212046), Phuket City Police (076-212129) or reported to any police inspectors, Gen Choti said.

“Or call the emergency number 191,” he added.

PHUKET: -- Police this morning recovered 2.5 million baht in cash believed to have been stolen during the armed robbery of a suburban bank branch in Phuket on Wednesday.

Officers moved in at 9am and raided a house in a street opposite the Tah Reua Shrine in Thalang, Phuket Provincial Police Commander Choti Chavaviwat told the Phuket Gazette.

He also revealed that police believe the man who conducted the robbery was Anusit Kaewmookda, 31, from Nakhon Ratchasima.

The raid followed the investigators' questioning Anusit's wife yesterday, Col Choti explained.

“In the house, which the couple had rented, police found the 2.5 million baht, still in the same white bag that was used in the robbery. It was hidden inside a black plastic trash bag that was placed outside, at the back of the house, and covered by a cloth,” Col Choti explained.

“Officers also found the homemade handgun used in the robbery sitting on top of a dresser in a bedroom of the house,” he added.

Police are still searching for Mr Anusit.

PHUKET: -- Police late this afternoon arrested Anusit Kaewmookda, the man wanted for the armed robbery of a Kasikornbank (KBank) branch north of Phuket Town on Wednesday.

A reported 2.7 million baht was stolen in the heist.

Police moved in and made the arrest soon after 5pm at an apartment behind Surakul Stadium where Mr Anusit was in hiding with one of his ex-girlfriends.

“Police tracked him by his mobile signal. Once he turned his mobile phone on, we knew where he was hiding and moved in to make the arrest,” Phuket Provincial Police commander Choti Chavaviwat told the Phuket Gazette.

Once police had Mr Anusit in custody, officers took him directly to Phuket City Police Station, where he confessed to the robbery in front of police and members of the press.

“I was the one who robbed KBank on Wednesday. I hid 2.5 million baht in my rental house in Koh Kaew,” Mr Anusit said.

“I took some of the money with me to buy 3 bahtweight of gold [valued at about 75,900 baht]. I also bought some new clothes and paid for the rented room to hide in before I was arrested,” he added.

Maj Gen Choti agreed with the assertion revealed by Phuket City Police Superintendent Sermphan Sirikong yesterday that the robbery on Wednesday may not be Mr Anusit’s first.

“Police have yet to finalize their investigation, but at this stage it seems likely that he is also the man who robbed the KBank branch at at the Tesco Lotus Chaofa shopping complex in Wichit on January 29 this year,” he said.

“At that time the suspect got away with 649,000 baht. However, police need to continue their investigation into this,” Maj Gen Choti added.
