November 4, 201213 yr Who are the ones to watch/ root for in this Mebourne Cup, anyway ? I want to be able to have an inside talking point with some Aussies I know... so any tips appreciated.
November 4, 201213 yr Author I suggest with the greatest respect that with horses , trainers and jockeys from far and wide , too many unknowns for any tip to be helpful;close your eyes and guess !
November 4, 201213 yr "Root"? what on earth are you talking about? Maybe you mean 'support' or 'barrack', but 'root' is the "F" word in Australia mate!
November 4, 201213 yr I cannot give any tips as my bet for the 1985 cup is still runnung somewhere. The Downunder Bar on Loh Kro is also showing the Cup, starts at 0905 from memory and if you dress up you may win a prize.

Almost correct ... extreme Western end of Loi Kroh just before River Market and the Iron Bridge intersection. From SK Money Exchange, turn left then right down LK toward Night Bazaar.... near that once infamous hotel site.
November 4, 201213 yr The OP was asking for a place 'inside the moat'. Then the only place would be the UN Irish Pub.
November 5, 201213 yr root for the horse that wins, that is my choice apart from the odd sheep farmer, Aussies aren't into beastiality.
November 5, 201213 yr For those that may be interested.... It’s being touted as the best Melbourne Cup field in years and the TAB agrees, with the going tough in terms of separating the leading hopes in the 152nd running of The Great Race at Flemington tomorrow. In keeping with the increasingly international flavour of the Melbourne Cup, European raiders are to the fore again this year, with Dunaden, Americain, Red Cadeaux and Mount Athos . Americain is fixed odds favourite at the TAB at $6 for the win, with last year’s Cup winner Dunaden and Mount Athos next in line at $7. British runner Red Cadeaux ($9) rounds out the leading hopes of a powerful European contingent. November 5, 201213 yr A different perspective from the Herald Sun: DUNADEN was the subject of a monster betting plunge at today's Call of the Card to win back-to-back Melbourne Cups. Bookmakers offered $8 and were knocked off their stands, including one bet of $50,000 placed with Eskander's Betstar. It was a different story though with 2010 Cup winner Americain, who drifted to $7 and attracted little Interest. Bookmaker Tom Waterhouse took plenty of bets on last year's runner-up, Red Cadeaux, at $12. Despite the lack of interest in Americain, owner Gerry Ryan remains upbeat about his chances tomorrow. "He was unlucky when he carried 58kg and ran wide before finishing fourth last year," Ryan said. "Plus Damien (Oliver) is in form. All we want is a bit of rain." Americain takes on Dunaden 4.5kg better off and meets runner-up Red Cadeaux 2kg more favourable than last year. "I picked barrier 12 when he won (in 2010), so hopefully that is a bit of an omen," Ryan said.
November 5, 201213 yr Is there anywhere one can place a bet on the race apart from going to the course?
November 5, 201213 yr Is there anywhere one can place a bet on the race apart from going to the course? The lottery and the ponies are the only gambling allowed in Thailand I believe.
November 5, 201213 yr I googled "Melbourne cup Thailand" and there appears to be some real gala events happening tomorrow, the downside is that they are in BKK. Prices starting around 3,000 baht to 9,000 baht entry fee to the functions. Some wise monkey should consider planning an event for next year in Chiangmai.
November 5, 201213 yr The hash pub on kamphaendin Rd just up from the Imperial Ping hotel which is smallish has TV coverage, drinks, food and sweeps. Run by an Aussie and is a good day out.
November 5, 201312 yr Probably the biggest social event on Australia's calendar. Might head down to the Down Under Bar and see what is going on. Shame we can't have a flutter.
