It seems that my passwords for my dial up connections are not working. For example two days ago I was on-line got the normal disconnect with my internet package. Attempted to reconnect received an error msg saying name or password was not correct.

Tried a second account with a different ISP same thing. I also attempted to reenter the information in.

My anti Virus is up to date and no new applications have been installed. What makes this really strange is if I open a terminal window and enter the user name and password manually it would fine.

Looked at all the settings and no problem there. Also used a different profile with no luck.

I had this happen once b4 when my partner was playing network settings. This time no one has touched the system.

Any Ideas would be great.

Oh and please use full Geek Speak, I am bilingual. 

When I had that same problem, the script that sends my user name and password started sending ununderstandable characters to my ISP.

Can't remember - I think they changed or flushed something on their side.

I had to redo the logon script.

Each month I use a different account. For trouble shooting I changed to a different package but with the same Vendor.

Each time I create a different connection. Don't reuses the old one.

Could they have stored my Mac Address? Now its corrupted? I think that is really reaching for it though. I doubt that would have set the system that way. But who the heck knows..

Could one my logging script be problematic. I looked in the ras Dir to find the script but was not successful. Anyone know the file to look at. I might replace it if I can find it to see if it works.

Think_too: good lead thanks.

When I am in Australia I use my ex-wife's ISP. She has an unlimited dial-up account.

When I am on and she wants to dial in she gets the same problem. This is because the ISP only allows one logon per account at one time......

Are you sure someone is not using your account ????

I don't think that is the problem because I used two different accounts. Same Same issue. I go with a month of unlimited service. The go pick up a new one so the password and name changes every month.

thanks though.

hi

your winsock dll probably has been corrupted or has a problem.

which os do you use ?

if you have a multiple user os like winxp or win2000, try loggin on as a different user and trying making a dial up there.

if it stil persist , try reinstalling a service pack over your os

winxp service pack 1

win2000 service pack 4

The MAC address idea is interresting, I know some majors thai ISP are working (and that since at least 2 years) on a system who will allow you to be connected without the famous couple "login name/password" but only by recognize your MAC Adress. The purpose of this system is double :

1) for the users of the hotspots with a wire connection, they were thinking to sell a fixed amount of data and let the customers be connected anywhere without headhache for the login name/password ... The hot spot must installed by not only one society, then imagine if you must have a subscription with all, with this system it could be a centralized server who will log you, and after give the right amount of money to the right ISP.

2) also to improve the security of the Police network. All the police station are connected, but the security is not tight enought, the fact to check also the MAC Adress can improve the security.

But I bet there is nothing to deal with your problem.

I get the same kind of trouble if I try to reconnect just after a disconnction, a simple reboot fix the problem. If you use dial up, I would like to advice you to check also how is your phone line: old one? how are the connection? A problem here can corrupt the data sending by your puter throught the modem.

Well the Winsock was a good Idea. Its been a long time since I even thought of that little bugger. Nothing has worked profiles or anything. Next step FDISK..

Sp had good result.

Sting01 i might have a friend call and see about the MAC. That is the only thing I can think off but really doubt that is the cause.

As to the phone line. I used my other system with out a problem and the connections speeds are great. I just have to use the terminal window to enter in the password and login in.

I really think its a file corruption because I had this happen on a different system. At the time I thought it was something my partner did. I found Novel on my laptop he was attempting to get some connecting sharing going. (Don't even ask)

More Ideas are welcome... :o
