I am planning on buying the Kindle eReader.

I am puzzled that all the offers do not include a charger,

it is an extra, at anything up to 20% more

Can I charge the Kindle via USB from my computer?

Yes.

You can buy a charger from many shops but I only charge me 2 Kindle readers from usb. They last long on a charge.

I was looking to buy an Ereader not so long ago, but went for a Chinese made Tablet instead and added an anti-glare screen protector.

Cheaper, more functions and reads as easy as an Ereader.

Put the right software on it, in my case Moonreader, and ift even reads out Epub books for you loud and clear.

I absolutely love my Kindle readers and my Paperwhite can last almost 2 month on one charge. My 3G key pad model can also read out audio book if wanted but never uses it.

I'm not talking about audio books, but text-to-speech.Normal epub text books read in a voice and accent of your choice.

It is extremely convenient for the young boy, as he can follow reading since the sentences are highlighted at the time they are spoken and at the same time he can hear the pronouncement and articulation.

How much does it weigh?

The iPad is way to heavy to be a practical replacement for a paperback.

It depends on the size you want to go with, but I think Kindle's are 6 or 7 inch and those Ainol or Onda 7" tablets are all below 400 gram.

That's very cool I must admit, now you are giving me a very excuse for buying one. My son is 3.5 years old and maybe too young but later he can make good use of that feature.

I will check the moonreader add you are talking about, my Note 1 phone can most likely run it, will check, thanks.

Your Note can definitely run moonreader, but for the text to speech you will need the pro version which will set you back an astonishing 73 Baht.

If you're interested send me a PM and I can even save you that 73 Baht.biggrin.png

And your son isn't too young for it. It is actually a an opportunity for him at this age to look at the sentences and hear them spoken. You can also set it that it highlights word per word and you can adjust the speed at which it is spoken.

I think this is the easiest way to learn reading.

By the way a 7" decent Chinese brand Tab cost you less than 3500 Baht these days.

170g according to the blurb!!

astral if you are a serious reader get an e-reader, nothing beats them for reading, they are very light and as mentioned they last extremely long time on a charge compared to a tablet.

I use my Paperwhite when I am home, can read in the bedroom with all the lights off, thus not disturbing my wife and out at the patio in the evening.

They are also fairly cheap to buy and I got about 50GB of books (Torrents downloaded for free) on my desktop pc and I can change the format if needed on the excellent free Calibre e-book manager program.

I sometimes buy books from Amazon when I find a book I really want. Those books are stored by Amazon, so if your Kindle is lost or brakes down you can always get the books back again (your account with Amazon).

On all your devises with Kindle program: Kindle reader, Android Phone, and Tablet you can anytime get the books you bought and you can even synchronize a book you are reading with other devises, you will off-course have to be on-line with all devises in order to do so.

Yes, but do you only have to charge it every two weeks, is the font size adjustable and can you get a 1000 books on it?

Font size, colour and style are all adjustable with just a swipe over the screen. Since it has 16 Gb storage I guess I get a bit more than 1000 books on it as well.

I don't know how long the battery would last solely used as a reader, since the boy also plays games on it and uses other applications, but I guess a day or two.

However I don't know anyone who reads continiously for 2 days let stand 2 weeks, so what is the point of having it charged when you're sleeping.

Best thing I ever done was buying a e reader to read books (Nexus7&Android phone) trouble is can't get anything done as i am to busy reading .

As a side question I notice you can share your books and when you click to do that it gives you

Bluetooth Facebook gmail Google etc what Is the best way to share your books.

I also notice I can buy books from my uk amazon account when in Thailand but when I try to buy from Google play it tells me not available in Thailand is that right I wonder it's not a big problem as I have amazon but seems strange

Both my devices are from the UK

Anyone out there with experience rooting a Kindle Fire?

I've had my Fire for over a year....very happy with the book reading experience and ability to check emails and do light surfing when there's a wifi available.

I'd like to use my Fire for more of my Thai studies....but no Thai keyboard, no Thai dictionary help available through Amazon.

So, are there any real pros to rooting a Fire?
