I want to buy a few new quality tools and the first up is a cordless drill and later on a sander, chop saw etc.

Can anyone recommend the best place for this and the better brands, ie Dewalt and Makita

Are there any small local shops other than Homepro, Supot or Home mart as options ???

Thanks for any advice

Personally I would recommend Home Mart in Maenam....

Good service there, if you have a problem... the guy to talk to sits at the last desk as you walk down to the lower level...(paint and hardware)

Ask For "Mr Dewalt" !!!

There's a shop called Tool Pro in Udon Thani and specialize in quality tools.I don't know if they are all over Thailand. I am not sure if they have 18 volt here or not.I brought mine from Canada.

I can tell you, the Makita 18V lithium ion tools are fabulous. I cannot sing high enough praises. I have a bunch of them (drill, grinder, large & small impact wrench, bandsaw, circular saw, reciprosaw, etc.). I use them all and use them often. So so far away from the old NiCads. They are fairly new to Thailand and cost an arm and a leg here. I purchased mine on the Internet in the US and carried some of them in luggage and had a friend ship some. Even with the shipping costs, I saved quite a bit of money over local purchase.

Another thing, you can buy a Makita 18V lithium ion battery charger in the 110V version for about $40, but the 220V version costs $200! Go figure. I found plans for converting the 110V charger to 220V. It requires changing a capacitor. If you can solder, you can do it. If anybody wants the plans, PM me. I converted two and have been using them for 4 years now and they work great. I also bought six batteries at the time I bought my tools. Very handy to have a lot of them as you can work all day without running to the charger. Way, way cheaper on US eBay that buying them in Thailand.

These lithium ion tools are such a hugely vast improvement over the old NiCads that it makes me wonder, "What's coming next?"

I have both Makita and Black and Decker 12vdc cordless drills. My one B & D is orver 12 years old and still works fine. My experience is that the 12vdc batteries in the B & D last longer, but both drills function fine. The Makita came with 2 batteries, the B & D only one. I had a B & D battery charger failure and was not able to find a replacement. They were only available on the internet and the shipping was ridiculous so I fixed the old one myself. Makita parts seem to be readilly available as I have purchased them for other power tools, normally switches and brushes.

I should mention Home Mart Maenam, also has a good selection of Makita tools too... if anyone prefers that brand... Just give "Mr Dewalt" a chance to change his hat ! biggrin.png

At least twice a year Dewalt has a huge promotion, on their tools, but seems to me it was in November, so next one in May or June, I would guess !

Black & Decker are a hobby mans tools. They are not good enough for tradesmans usage. Most of the power tools used by 'tradies' in Australia are Makita. I still have Makita Power saws,Planers and Drills which i bought 20 years ago. These were used on a daily basis over that time, still working well, but looking a bit shabby now. Wish i had brought them to Thailand with me.
