You must live in Pattaya. When you put ALL Thais into the pigeon hole you construct, then you only show your ignorance of the Thai culture as a whole -- though you may well accurately describe the microcosm of Pattaya The people you describe exist and plenty of them, but all Thais are not that way. I've done a lot of research on it and I'm impressed. When first got here there were many countries in the running for the hub of sex tourism including, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Saigon; but Thailand won and no mean feat it was.

BTW a wise, old taxi driver once told me that if you have a problem with your wife and mia noi, it's time for number three.

I am married to a Thai man. In recent years he has slowly stopped going out with his old schoolfriends. There's just one left that he regularly sees - we visit each other's houses and they sometimes go out at night. When I asked why they no longer go out with the group, he replied that all of the others have minor wives, sometimes more than one, and also end every lads' night out in a brothel. So he and his one faithful friend feel alienated from the group.

A few years ago this was not the case. The group was close-knit, were all getting married, starting families, and just starting to move up the career ladder. Then they all found that, firstly, they could afford minor wives and, secondly, their wives were not quite as young, slim, pretty, horny or eager-to-please as they used to be.

It seems to me that to a majority of Thai men, having a minor wife, or not, is simply a matter of being able to afford one, or not.

Any married couple will tell you that a marriage changes after time, and after kids. But the the majority of Thai men don't change. They can't be bothered to try to find out what might get their wives in the mood, and head elsewhere instead. (If you think I'm tarring them all with the same brush, please note the first sentence of this comment again. I have a good one, as do a couple of my friends. But I have spoken to so many women with the same story to tell - he wants a nubile young plaything for sex, not a busy, tired mother / housewife / full-time worker.)

On the other hand, Thai women seem to have had distrust of men instilled in them since childhood - they probably saw older male relatives being unfaithful, and their mothers probably made sure that they always carry a large helping of suspicion with them. This is a mixed blessing. They are alert to it, not blind. BUT some women are paranoid about it, seeing lies everywhere, and creating a bad atmosphere in what could be a good marriage. I have recently spoken to a good Thai friend who has a wonderful husband, and told her to trust her instincts with him, rather than to carry on suspecting something with every phone conversation with a female colleague, with every smile at female strangers.

What's the answer? I honestly don't know. Being a foreigner, it's easy for me to say that my society is better, and Thai people should learn from it. But of course it's not that simple. The infidelity problem is imbedded in the wider culture, where let's face it, women still have less right to do as they want. If, for example, I ask an adulterous Thai man "How would you feel if she cheated on you?" his reply would undoubtedly be "angry, hurt" etc. But if I point out that she feels exactly the same about his infidelity, he wouldn't really believe me, because in his eyes, women have less rights and less right to have and express feelings.

What's the answer? Perhaps time is the answer. My husband, after all, is a good, faithful man, and so my son is learning that from him. Perhaps the answer is globalisation, and the mixing pot of ideas and cultures, though we all know that Thailand is fiercely proud and resistant to their "cultural" erosion. Perhaps the answer is genetics. According to some scientists, men will be extinct at some point in the distant future, so perhaps while the numbers dwindle we will see new ways of organising families and society.

It is a semantic difference but until you understand Thais don't think it is a semantic difference you will have a hard time in Thailand.

When I met a divorced single-mother online, I felt treated as if I was rich. She asked me to buy her father a watch when I visited. Also, our first meal together there was paid by her, but then I was instructed that I had to payback and that meant buying a dinner for 15 of her friends. I didn't understand this until it was my time to pay the bill. If we traveled somewhere, I paid for gas in her friend's car.

Well, it wasn't all about money, but I just felt the two times I visited last year (2 weeks each time), that Thai people I met are a bit wasteful and don't know frugal. They thought nothing of spending money.

The Thai lady has big money problems (2 x annual income), but still went out and bought an iPhone. Oh well.

I'm wary of any long term relationship with someone far away, particularly if they are from a poor region of a country like Thailand and spend money like no tomorrow. I have heard, that when you don't have a lot of money or don't make a lot, you tend to spend it all.

Two timing husbands and wives is a fact of life and a civil adult decision. As long as it's not a security breach, a cut off a sliced loaf is never missed. The laugh is the omission and denial of rampant prostitution in Thailand and wives doing double duty as hookers and those doing it on the side or with common law husbands, a euphemism for pimps.
