Watched some BBC news report about the latest round of violence in Northern Ireland and they interviewed a couple of guys. The european friend i was with said she could get about 3 words. I could get a few more but then I've met people from Northern Ireland before.

And the Gallaghers are alright- Mancunians are usually fairly understandable. Don't get me started on the Glaswegians!

Get the Glaswegians together and they may as well be speaking martian.

I was suprised by the subtitles though as the English folk on the show were speaking the queens english, easily understandable.

Having said that, I wish subtitles could be applied to anytime a US program starts talking in US Cutomary Units (measurements/distances/volume/weight etc etc) as how often do any of us have a converter in our back pockets?

According to Wiki

According to the CIA Factbook, the United States is one of three countries (the others being Liberia and Burma/Myanmar) that has not adopted the International System of Units (SI) metric system as their official system of weights and measures. The U.S. does not primarily use SI units in its commercial activities, although they are standard in science, medicine, and government (including the U.S. Armed Forces), as well as many sectors of industry

Quite right. There should be zero tolerance for non-standard measurements. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. They'll be pounding us with tons of obscure measurements, like a barrel of monkeys. They're just pulling our chain

The problem is visualising 450 feet, or a 3/16th spanner.

I wonder why we don't have a World standard that every country adheres to? Not just in measurements but also plugs and sockets, driving on the same side of the road, mobile phone networks and so on.

Better that your electrical gadgets don't work and you've no idea how much the beer and lobster costs.

Then you can relax and just enjoy yourself.

Unfortunately the UK decided to go to European measures as a part of the Common Market cooperation.

The Imperial units, still used by the US, were much more sensible in many ways - a foot-long piece of wood can be cut in half, in thirds, in quarters and in sixths and still result in a whole-number of inches. A metre can only be split into halves, quarters and tenths. Was the same with monetary units.

Using a duodecimal system is much more elegant than a simple decimal system, but as the French and Germans need to count on their fingers, we have to use the simple system to accommodate them.

Instead, we should have switched to using a duodecimal counting system, and got the best of both worlds. People would've got used to it eventually.

I don't know why do they keep changing the charger systems on phones? Why does one model have one plug and another a different one?

Because they can SELL MORE CRAP

there you go

3. Australians...............The whole point of Australia is to bash Poms, It's the life blood of the nation. Slipping off the radar due to shocking results at the Olympics and The Ashes.

We should be number one, we have a 61 page thread in Bedlam that's been bashing us for years. crazy.gif

Depends - were you cheering for Andy Murray yesterday, or Federer?

Tomorrow it'll probably be Djokovic, 'cos half the Balkans now live in Melbourne.

Bit hard to work out how many slugs left in your six shooter with the decimal system.

Given that you can't have a fraction of a slug or any decimal of a slug less than one, one whole one is usually enough, if it were a twelve shooter, the fractional chances are easier to work out, and the base chance would be founded on two.

Who was I cheering for?

Li Na of course.....

Not sure about half the Balkans living in Melbourne but if a Greek tennis player ever makes the Open it will be standing room only.

What makes you think I'm Balkanese anyway?

Yes, pity Squeaky won. Must be most off-putting for the opponent to hear a puppy trodden-on just after every shot their opponent makes. I know it put me off, and I was just lounging in an armchair.

Not accusing you of being Balkanese, just the rest of Melbourne.

I'm not Melbournese either, I'm from the only free settler state.

Pretty hard if you're a convict stater.

But then there's a move a foot to make people proud of the fact that great great great grandpa was dragged to the country in chains.

(Their ancestor was a liberal thinker jailed for encouraging free thought among the working class, not some common thief). tongue.png

My ancestor was hanged instead of being deported.

So I am a proud Brit, rather than a colonial cousin.

They went to America.

Nice try though! biggrin.png

Political prisoners made up a small proportion of convicts. They arrived in waves corresponding to political unrest in the Britain and Ireland. They included the First Scottish Martyrs in 1794; British Naval Mutineers (from the Nore Mutiny) in 1797 and 1801; Irish rebels in 1798, 1803, 1848 and 1868; Scots Rebels (1820); Yorkshire Rebels (1820 and 1822); leaders of the Merthyr Tydfil rising of 1831; The Tolpuddle Martyrs (1834); Swing Rioters and Machine Breakers (1828–1833); Upper Canada rebellion/Lower Canada Rebellion (1839) and Chartists (1842)

WOOOOOO....... HOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!

BREAKING NEWS: South Wales Police have asked for witness’s to come forward regarding a brutal crime against 15 English men on a recent visit to Cardiff who were robbed of a Grand Slam they had come to collect and also had their chariot badly vandalised during the visit to the Welsh capital?

... Apparently this heinous... crime was carried out by a gang of 15 Welsh guys dressed in bright red shirts in broad daylight in front of 75,439 people who gathered around the gang attack and just stood there cheering, clapping and singing hymns and arias as if they were encouraging the gang.

A police spokesmen for the South Wales force said this “This sort of attack is just sickening……..One of the victims was a young lad called Owen Farrell who was on his first trip to Wales and has been traumatised by the whole shocking experience and to make matters even worse his father was forced to watch the entire crime from start to finish and could not lift a finger to protect his son from the sickening and relentless battering meted out by the conspicuously dressed red shirted gang”.

The police spokesman continued, “We are following a number of leads and believe this crimson shirted gang may be linked to a similar attack in Twickenham a year ago”.

Haha! biggrin.png

do you really want me to go there smokie ?

it wouldn't be the first time now, would it ? biggrin.png

so that must make the all blacks ranked 3rd in the world at the moment, seeing as the English ran riot at the back end of 2012 and going into a grand slam decider against the Taffs. wink.png
