Reliable Alternative To Betaxolol (0.25%) For The Treatment Of Glaucoma

I was diagnosed with glaucoma more than 20 years ago, and ever since then I have been taking daily eye drops , Alcon Betoptic (Betaxolol 0.25%).

I periodically have my eyes checked and the pressure measured and occasionally do a visual field test and I am pretty much OK.

My problem is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to get a regular supply of Betoptic eye drops, (1 bottle lasts a month). Sometimes I have to wait several weeks for a new delivery and right now every pharmacist tells me that it will be at least 3 months before a new supply will arrive.(Note than when I stop taking the drops for a week or so, my eye pressure increases.)

I have no idea what causes these periods of non-availability – in fact Fascino once told me that they would not be stocking the drops any more, yet they were back on their shelves a month or so later.

Whatever the reason, I'm pretty fed up with it, and was wondering if I could change to a different medication with a more reliable distribution.

Is there anyone out there who is also has glaucoma and takes a different medication and if so, is it is always available?

I have had good results from Alcon Travatan in combination with Alcon Timolol Maleate from local drug stores (they have to order but got in 2-3 days) and currently use Pfizer Xalacom from hospital. But these are not the same medication so would check with doctor first and he will likely want to make some texts to confirm working OK. Not sure if you have the same problem but have severe dry eyes and these medications are not kind to that condition but now using Alcon Genteal Gel two or three times a day which seems to help that problem.

Betoptic is the only form of betataxolol in Thailand.

There are other drugs but they are not identical so would need to consult your opthalmaologist before making a switch.

Of the drugs in this general class probably the most widely available (and also least exp[ensive, as there are locally made brands) would be timolsol. But do check with your doctor to see if it is suitable for you and get advice as to dosage if it is.
