Toilets At All Bangkok Bus-Stops, Pongsapat Says

The promises made by politicians in the Bangkok governor's elections are just one big joke. cheesy.gif When are the Thai people going to realize that these campaign promises are just smoking mirrows? Just look at what Yingluck promised during her election and how many programs have been successfully implemented.

Until Thailand can hold their politicians accountable for their promises, it will continue to be more of the same. So Sad!

smoking mirrows = smoke and mirrors.

I read it as 'smoking minnows'. Couldn't work out how they lit up underwater.

He wants to build incinerators to reduce the build of garbage?

Perhaps a basic course in environmental science is what he needs most. BKK has a problem with air pollution far more serious than the build up of garbage. BKK cannot take any more air pollution. The city needs less heavy metals and organics in the air that the people breath.

How about some recycling centers and a public education to reduce unnecessary packaging; Real fines for illegal dumping and littering enforcement of the existing BMA environmental protection laws in respect to the dumping of raw sewage and industrial effluent?

None of the candidates wants to tackle these issues.BKK is one stinky, filthy place.

It would be nice if a governor said something about more green space, more trees & less pavement and a cleanup of the klongs.

Pretty sure Sukhumbhand covered that (more green space) in his own "promises".

All of these promises raise lots of questions. For instance, why are the more important projects, like traffic alleviation, not already being planned and worked on? The point is that you don't wait for elections to do this stuff....unless you are not really going to do it. I mean, where is the accountability for politicians both making such promises and for not keeping them if they don't do what they promise?

This shows the lack of an effective or meaningful civil society or real government oversight by the public. Is the public asking for that many toilets? And, as others have said, where will they be placed and who will keep them clean? And, as is typical for countries where personal freedoms come second to government and it's big business cronies, it is glaring that there are record auto sales in Thailand (good for the economy, right?) but nothing being done about the public infrastructure that is already way over its limit with autos. Doesn't anybody see the obvious transparent pandering by the current Bangkok mayor with his plans for congestion management? This is the type of planning the belongs anywhere but in the hands of politicians.

I like your point about where will they be placed, and remembering that the promise is all 4,900 bus stops.

A large % of the 4,900 are located where footpaths are very narrow, so are they going to buy piecs of land (e.g. shophouse and land), in prime locations this would mean millions of Baht per bus stop which cannot possibly be justified, or rent the shophouse, the cost of which would be way beyond what could be justified for a toilet, and it's a recuring cost every month. Plus establishment costs and manning costs and cleaning costs and maintenance costs.

Also on many road the bus stops are jsut 200 / 250 metres apart. How can anybody justify a toilet at every one of these stops?

But hey maybe a good prospect for someone to own and run 4,900 condom vending machines.

Maybe with plenty of toilets people will use the busses more and that will ease up the traffic burden.

Toilets at every bus stop. Oh boy. You can't make this sh*t up. Anybody have friends at international newspapers?

...or comedians, perhaps?

What should of course be focused on is coordinated bus / bts / park and ride / underground trains which are well organized and coordinated, run to published easy to find scheduled / multi use easy to buy ticketing / susidised fares to gain a better spread of wealth, and make gains in quality of life, and in reality the passenger waits less than 5 minutes to connect. Campaiging and real gains on this subject would have meaning and would take Thailand forward and better prepared for AEC, and take Thailand up the ladder and a step closer to second world.

There is no doubt of course that pt and their Bkk governor candidares / bkk governor election machine are taking a leaf out of the broader national pt approach, simple items which look impressive and win votes from the unaware folks who don't really see the big picture (and with all respect to thses folks).

So sad.

Well, there could be some benefits to the 4900 toilets to some elements of Thai society! Firstly, rent by the hour condo owners could face dire financial consequences as hookers decide they can save money by taking the John in the John for a quicky!. After 2am they will become a warm and dry home from home for Bangkoks homeless. If just 10 people take a dump in them every day at say an average of 1/2 a kilo per dump,( or could be several kilos for some farang) then as a minimum, some organization is going to have to go around and collect some 25-50 metric tons of <deleted> every day, let alone the probable 1/2 million liters of piss each day on top of that. I wonder if the Generals relatives own a sewage collection and disposal business by any chance? Only coincidence if they do I am sure, and no doubt Mr Happy Toilet will be pushing for his business to get the contract to provide 4900 toilets, no doubt priced out at around 1 million baht each! Way to go PTP!!! Peoples Toilet Party!

I also imagine that the General has ensured that nobody that lives within 50m of a bus stop will now vote for him!

It's called job creation. I applaud the PTP for their creative ideas to spur job growth. crazy.gif

I can't believe you guys are actually debating some of the promises as if they may actually happen.

They are all lies. Empty promises for the masses created purely with intention to get their vote. None of them will happen....but what does that matter once he's elected?

He definitely stole the PTP playbook and has taken it to a whole new level.

Empty promises? All lies to get the vote of the masses? Looks like someone has been learning from the two main British parties, particularly the Labour liars and hypocrites.

No, this lot take it to a totally different level, there is no comparison.

If you are suggesting that The Tories aren't adept to BS then you clearly didn't live under a Thatcher government

It is held by many that Blair learned how to get elected by spending some considerable time with Bill Clinton and his spin merchants. H e mastered the art of communicating with the electorate via TV and it seemed that he was trying to create the sort of aura that Kennedy generated. As was Clinton, Blair was renowned for being economical with the truth, his nickname used by many was B. Liar.

Reading the OP was a source of great amusement to me, so much in fact that I wondered this manifesto had been drawn up by somebody who was criminally insane. Certainly anybody taking it at face value needs psychiatric help in my opinion.

Pheu Thai Party candidate Pongsapat Pongcharoen promised yesterday to build public toilets at all 4,900-plus bus stops in the capital if he is elected as the next Bangkok governor.

Pongsapat said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration under his leadership would not suffer from floods.

Bangkok governor candidates warned to only campaign practical & permissible election policies

BANGKOK, 24 January 2013 (NNT) – All contenders in the upcoming Bangkok gubernatorial election are warned to only employ campaign policies, which are practical under the jurisdiction of the capital governor.

Bangkok Election Commission Office Director Veera Yee-prae warned all Bangkok governor candidates to make sure that their future deputies, secretaries and advisors, have given their written consents to use their names in the election campaign and to confirm their readiness to start working if their respective candidate wins the election.

He added that all campaign policies must also be realistic and possible for execution under the authority of the Bangkok Governor, without exceeding the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s allocated budget.

They have no made their most important campaign promise yet - how much will each pay for votes.

The Democrats candidate Mom Sukhumband stands above such triffling things like bribes, k.Pongsapat as good police General doesn't ask now.

The full paragraph is

"Meanwhile, Pheu Thai contender Police General Pongsapat Pongcharoen campaigned in Din Daeng district, assuring voters that his policies can be fully realized once he is elected. In addition to highlighting seamless collaboration with government agencies, Police General Pongsapat promised to improve the quality of life and tackle drug problems in the area."

I really like the Pheu Thai candidate emphasising "seamless collaboration with government agencies". It suggests that only this candidate can do that and that doing so is worthwhile. No more confusion on what needs to be controlled, flooded or who can extend the BTS/MRT. Vote for me and all will be well.

Now to be fair we look at the other candidates and find almost nothing. Must be the bias theNation is showing once more wink.png

An additional policy statement today from the Toilets-At-All-Bangkok-Bus-Stops and No-Flooding candidate.

It harkens back a decade ago when his fellow Sam Houston State Uni. alumni/doctoral program/policeman associate made similar vows.

The Pheu Thai contender also vowed to eradicate drug problems in Bangkok communities.

No surprise there. k. Pongsapat is known to be an associate of that other drug war friend and might have picked up some pointers from another, but lowly Pol. Captain on how to eradicate drug problems within three or six months wink.png
