Where Is True Ultra High Speed Internet Available?

Hi Guys,

do any of you know in which areas of Thailand True Ultra High Speed Internet or similar ones from 3BB and co. are available in General?

Is it available in more places than BKK, Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai?

I tried to get theese information from the customer service. And I know even in BKK you cant get it everywhere. But customer service is asking for a concret house, while I just want to know in general if its available on e.g. Koh Samui, Koh Chang or other areas of Thailand.

it should be the fastest possible Internet in Thailand. ADSL 50MB+. Not sure how good its really is, but I need as fast and STABLE as possible Internet for my kind of Homebusiness.

Just keep in mind the speed advertised in the plans are "in-Thailand" speeds; you won't get that speed to international web sites/servers. In fact, the international speed for a 50+Mb plans when browsing, emailing, etc., won't be any/much faster than a 10Mb plan since Thai ISPs limit/throttle their international bandwidth on most all plans. Now, you will get faster international download speeds if using a torrent program or download manager, but for general internet usage your international speed will be about the same for all the different speed plans. Many, many threads/posts on ThaiVisa confirming this, but be sure to ignore those posts where people using Speedtest.net think that are getting faster-than-light pings time and download speeds.

Alternatively you could ask a Thai friend to grind through some Thai social forums like pantip.

BTW didn't I see a sign for 100Mb broadband on the way in from the airport last year?

For day to day, general internet usage a person probably won't notice a difference. Plus, since True implemented bursting on their DOCSIS system I can pull around 28Mb download speeds on my 14Mb plan for short periods of 30 seconds or so...great for loading web pages really fast and download of smaller files.

So basicly what you tell me in terms of my question about where is High Speed Internet available... that I dont need to get True Ultra High Speed and a slower rate is fine, so I could also go on Islands or smaller places except for the TOP 4 Places in Thailand (BKK, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai), where no True Super crazy speed is available?

No, I just saying don't expect just because you get say a 50Mb plan that you will get 50Mb speed to international servers. Seems many folks think if I get a faster plan then my speed to servers all over the world/back to the home country will also be faster---not necessarily...and in fact, probably not.

You will most likely get the 50Mb speed to "in-Thailand" web sites/servers but the download speed you will get to most international servers will be significantly less....probably something in the 5Mb ballpark when measured with a Java-based speed tester which is not easily fooled by in-country cache servers causing bogus download and/or ping time results. And a 10Mb plan will probably pull that same 5Mb international speed. Using a "Flash-based/OOKLA" speed tester like Speedtest.net on a say a 50Mb plan (or whatever speed plan) can easily show results of 50Mb download speed and a ping time like that far-off server in Farang Land is just across the soi....a.k.a., the Flash-based speed tester was fooled/gave skewed results due to "in-Thailand" cache servers used by the ISP...you really didn't download that speedtest test file from that far off server but from the "in-country" cache server.

Don't get me wrong, cache servers are a good thing to help speed up internet use, but they can also cause bogus results with some speed testing programs and give people the false impression they are getting a really fast speed to the U.S/Europe/etc., but then those same people wonder why they have a hard time streaming live video when just a few Mb's of speed is really needed, the website pulls up so slowly, etc. There are many, many posts/threads and thousands of individual posts on ThaiVisa discussing faster-than-light ping times, download speeds, etc....and how the "international" access/speeds are limited/throttled by most Thai ISP on most of their plans.

Summary: a Thai ISP high speed plan does not automatically mean high speed international speed for general internet usage where single-threaded operations are used like in typical internet browsing, email, live video streaming, etc., but if using a torrent program or download manager to download files where multiple-threaded operation are used you can get much higher download speeds...maybe even up to the plan's in-Thailand/advertised speed rating. And no, I'm also not saying all Thai ISPs will give the same international speed say on their 10, 20, 50Mb, whatever plans....so, so much can depend on "local" circuits....a person on ABC 10Mb plan may get very good speed & reliability in say Bangkok but another person on the same ABC 10Mb plan say in Pattaya may get low speed and poor reliability. Getting good internet in Thailand can be a crapshoot... a lot depends on the quality of local circuits. Guess this is why you see many people saying ISP XYZ has been good for them; while you will see many people saying ISP XYZ has been bad for them. Location, Location, Location (a.k.a., local circuits) can make a big difference. Good luck.
