New appeal to find missing British tourist

KOH PHANGAN: -- It's almost five years since English tourist Daniel Hall went missing while backpacking in Thailand. He was last seen on Koh Phangan in 2008.

Daniel, was 35 years old in 2008 when he was last seen around midday on February 25, 2008, at a Full Moon after party, in a bar known as "Back Yard Bar".

British media reported Daniel had a history degree from Birmingham University, England, but had been working in Norwich as a labourer before travelling to Thailand for an extended back packing holiday.

He arrived in Thailand at the end of January 2008 and initially stayed with a friend in Bangkok. He then went to stay at Lam Son bungalows, on Hat Yao Beach on the island Koh Phangan on February 16, 2008. Here he met up with a Spanish friend, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reported.

The 'Back Yard Bar' is in the south east region of Koh Phangan and is described by the Thailand police report as being in the area of Ban Hua Laem, Village 6 Ban Tai sub district.

Daniel was reportedly seen there by a number of people during Monday morning (up to 30,000 people were at the Full Moon party earlier). The last known contact Daniel had was with two friends who rang him later that day.

Daniel has never been heard from or seen since. His belongings were still at the Lam Son bungalow where he had been staying and it was later established that no money had been withdrawn from his bank account since February 22, 2008. Daniel's phone was eventually located.

Despite conducting enquiries and carrying out liaison with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Thai authorities, no further information has been forthcoming.

Friends and family carried out numerous searches and enquiries looking for him, some have even travelled from the UK to the island.

Appeals by Daniel's university friends using various social network sites including Facebook targeted the back packing community who had been in Thailand and may have visited the island at the relevant times.

This resulted in a photograph being supplied which shows Daniel on the side and two men in the centre, one being a topless man with a goatee beard and shaved head. Officers would like to speak to these two men seen looking towards Daniel in the photograph as they may be potential witnesses to Daniel's movements on Koh Phangan. They are thought to be British nationals.

Officers would also be interested in speaking to any of the individuals in the photograph.

Norfolk Police have also been on Crimewatch to try to jog people's memories.

Senior Investigating officer DCI Guy said: "We are hoping that such high profile coverage will help us to discover more about Daniel's last known movements and what became of him . Many of the party goers at the Full Moon party would have been British and five years later would now be living and working back in the UK."

In 2008, Mr Hall was 5ft 10in tall, of average build, with dark cropped brown hair, the Norfolk Eastern Daily Press reported.

He had a tattoo in the centre of his upper back of the blue finger depicted in the Beatles Yellow Submarine Album and tribal tattoos on his bicep.

That bar isn't the most salubrious venue in Haad Rin and it is surrounded by steep cliffs. What are the chances he fell to his death and they never recovered the body?

Very sad.

the big fella should be easy to identify, at least to anyone that knows him, the other bloke that appears to have his fist closed would be a bit harder.......

Very sad story and unfortunately there are a number of things that could have happened... Not all of them with happy outcomes. I hope for his family and friends sake they are put at rest with the outcome whatever it may be. :(

if he was at the backyard it was already past 9 am the day after the full moon as it would not be open otherwise.

Backyard is an after party.

Over the years there have been foreigners who have drowned and their bodies washed up on beaches. Not all have been identified. Maybe they should check those cases also. I recall one in Phuket that had tattoo's all over his body. Worth looking into?

very sad ,, but not unique.. I hate to say but I think its better to let go .. the back yard bar is an after hours place where everybody is high as a kite and sleep deprived , if they couldnt dig out any info 5 years ago they aint gonna remember now. I lived there around that time. I ran a business so I wasnt a hardcore partier like most who where there and still dont remember much of the 4 years I lived there... . unless someone actually witnessed a murder or something equally horifying or memorable no one will remember a thing. If he said the wrong thing to the wrong person theres a million places he could have been taken to that would be out of sight from everybody... jungles mountains and sea all around..... sorry for your loss. but sometime hope is pointless.

Dead as a dodo I'm afraid. In my youth I lived in a far from home party place and people regularly disappeared. No internet then so much were just forgotten but misadventure was a poor killer. Most were victims of their own stupidity, often drug related, nearly always with alcohol and quite a few up for the Darwin Awards.

why don't they offer a 1 million baht finding him fee (death or alive)

than maybe some local BIB can get clean and share the money with the lucky finder

i suppose we can all say we have been there done that and have the "T" shirt, but although hope is pointless to you, me and Jacky Jacky around the corner, 1 way or another he had a Mum and Dad, they would be surviving on hope as that is most likley all the poor buggers have left, as i have said before the big fella with all the tough stickers would have to stand out like tits on a bull in a china shop, the way he has half his body done, yes i know it is 5 years and he would of most likley had more work done, but stranger things have happened.....

It's looking for a needle in a haystack. He could have been dropped from a Cliff, he could have been the victim of a crime but it is just as likely that he doesn't want to be found anymore. Hard to believe sometimes for family and friends but fairly common. (And imagine when he had a farang wife/GF than disappearance is the preferred option)

About 2009/10 I remember seeing the missing person notices ripped down where they were put up round the bann Tai 7/11 area i thought that wasn't good that people were doing that.

Terrible for The Family, I hope one day some they get the answers they need.

If he went swimming and got lost at sea or if he went wandering off into the jungle between Hadrin and Ban Kai then he may never be found. Its been a long time. I feel terrible for his parents but it seems after all these years and no sign of him, its not looking good.

Backyard isn't a swimming venue it's on the side of a cliff and the jungle would lead you back to Haad Rin as it is on the pinnacle between the 2 Haad Rin beaches. Who knows who he met and where he ended up but that photo shows nothing really.

Someone mentioned a body being found in Phuket?? Have a quick look at a map before jumping to conclusions.

Well yes but people do leave Backyard and go down to the beach. Nobody knows where he went after Backyard is the point here. He could have gone anywhere.

I agree, the photo doesn't tell much, we can assume that those two guys may have had some issue but really photos can be interpreted in many ways. All we know is that two most likely drunk guys were standing near him in the last photo taken of him before he disappeared some time later.

Get your point but at what point is hope hope-less or 'pointless' for the family of the missing person? I'd say never as naturally we cling to our hopes as normal human beings.. and not your call to even suggest otherwise is it? All the best to the guy and those still seeking him.. enough said...

It is important to know what he was lay wearing as even if the worst case scenario happened they shall need to identify him as to give closure to his family

Aldo his hight and feet size

As there are allot of bodies that ten up every year that are uh recognisable

Sorry post this but it is necessary
