New Pickup

Featured Replies

I'm getting ready to buy a new pickup truck and have pretty much decided on an Isuzu V-Cross 4WD 3.0 which looks like it will cost about 992K baht, can anyone come up with any quantative reasons why the Ford Ranger or the Mazda BT50 is a better, safer or more cost effective purchase? Thanks in advance

The Ranger get 5 star safety rating:

The Ranger (high rider model) can "swim" in 80 cm water without drowning.

I bought a Ranger so it's therefore the best pick-up truck on the Thai market, period.biggrin.png

Transam bought a Toyota Vigo, so seen though his eyes, that's the best. wink.png

The Isuzu is without doubt very solid but outdated, may I ask what's your reasons buying one?

In the end of the day, You have to buy what you like, all the trucks on the Thai market got their pros and cons .

When I saw the Ranger and read about it on the Web, I knew I wanted one.

I never tried a Vigo or an Isuzu, not interested. Tried a BT50 and it drove great, but the Ranger is (way) a better looker seen though my eyes.

I think the BT50 is much better looking, so bought that one. I have had a couple of Isuzu's before and also a Navara, but way prefer the driving of the BT50 over the new Isuzu, which is why I ended up with Mazda in stead of Isuzu. Because of looks, previous driving experience and personal preferences those two were the only ones I seriously considered.

But all this is not quantative.

Are you buying what YOU want. ?. Or what the Thai Family want. I had a lift in a new V Cross ,superb , but Mom n Pops Cement bench was an improvement on its rear seats.. coffee1.gif

Must add that with a truck it really isn't what it looks like but more about doing a job with reliability. Once your inside the thing who gives a sh_t what it looks like. Though must admit the previous Isuzu did look sh_t. laugh.png

If the D-Max is outdated, so is the T6 Ranger LOL :)

Once your inside the thing who gives a sh_t what it looks like.

Well, that's where interior styling comes into it. The BT-50 Pro wins there, with the Triton as first runner-up followed by the Ranger, IMHO. The Hilux can slog it out with the Navara for the wooden spoon though ;)

Sure it is, it's supposedly build as a work horse but how many Thaivisa members actually use them as that. I just want the safety of the heavy truck and felling more confident when the roads floods.

Use it now and again for hauling large plants for the garden.

I will never again own a sedan car in Thailand.

Well yeh, but I am a Walnut dash kinda guy. intheclub.gif .............laugh.png

That's exactly how my first SUV made me feel... but not my first truck - it was a D-Max though ;)

Back to the OP, technically speaking the T6 Ranger is a clear winner in the segment no matter how you look at it, IMHO, but broken delivery promises/lies and suspect after sales service appear to be its achilles heel.

I didn't think performance or crash tests performed outside of Thailand applied to the cars sold in Thailand. Of course I don't know of such tests done in Thailand at all but if they were I'd like to see them.

ASEAN NCAP (based in Malaysia and with lax versions of the ANCAP criteria) got off the ground properly earlier this year... Hopefully we'll start to se some results for pickups later this year...

Why not, as far as I know the T6 Ranger is only made in Thailand and South Africa.

In Thailand they don't do crash tests, they do them in real life all over the Kingdom every day (sadly).

Well ive just paid 35 K for a stupid 666 No Plate.. .I allway thought folks who paid for such crap were Mad. Im a Wallnet Sized Brain kinda Guyw00t.gif . If it feels good .Do It.. I only loved BMW for their dash layout, a 500 Sierra was a better Car. Enjoy Today.coffee1.gif

I dont care what it looks like even when I'm still outside. It's a car not a dance partner.

The only things that matter are comfort, quality, reliability, economy, safety etc.

Though I was a bit miffed to discover the other day that my pickup doesnt have a dashboard hook for hanging a bag of takeaway noodle soup on. It has all sorts of other stupid gadgets that I will never use, but not that nice useful tool. sad.png

Looks like a lot of support for the Ranger but have to admit that the after sales service issue does make me very wary.

Isuzu: outdated yes, when compared to latest technology, well proven and easily maintainable here is another way to put it.

Why am I buying it/who is it for: it's for me and the wife, I bought a new CRV eight years ago and sold that last year, I now need a replacement vehicle and a pickup truck ticks many of the boxes. Yes it'll be a 4 door so if the rear seats are hard, I'll apologise to all passengers in advance :)

The crash test reports are important and Ranger does fare better than Isuzu by a wide margin, troubling aspect that.

Looks: do I really care that much about this aspect, nah!

What will I use it for: local and distance travel, hauling stuff that always seems to need hauling (non commercial), navigating the floods around Watkate once a year.

Back on track please:

So the message I get here is that the BT50 and the Ranger (same vehicle really) look nicer and are potentially safer vehicles (per assumed crash test reports), those two vehicles also include more modern techology than the Isuzu although there are acknowledged problems with after sales service. Anything else that is meaningful?

Go to the dealers and test ride as many as possible.

Oddly I have never been a test drive kind of person and I don't think that a short test drive tells the story to any meanigful extent, I think it takes several days/weeks of driving before the true characteristics of a vehicle become apparent, but there again I'm a slow learner so maybe it's just me.

The T6 is also built in Argentina. The Thai domestic model has a different grade chassis than the Australian market version that was crash tested.

I love my T6 but issue's with Ford mean I would never buy another Ford, For instance mine has a loud clunking noise coming from the clutch, Ford tell me this is normal even though the noise was not present when new and now it is getting hard to engage gears with out crunching the syncro's. another is I munted the fender a while back and as they are cheap (2,000b) I chose to order one myself and have it painted and fitted instead of using the insurance....... 4 weeks later Ford still cannot tell me when I might get my fender.

True, but still a short test ride will give you the first important impressions.

Yes, as my mrs drives our ride, many times l have driven drunk guys trucks home, AND really amazed at the difference between makes, but must admit most were basic trucks.

The Mazda and the baby ford will show their true colours when it comes to selling them second hand - prepare the tissues boys, Isuzu and Toyota will always be top dogs in that field, nissan and mitsu always in the background - nothing great/nothing bad, the big ford on the other hand....... time will tell, scarce as tits on a bull at the moment.

Since you had a CRV, are you sure that a PPV SUV would not fulfill your needs in a similar manner?

I guess the additional advantage would be the comfort for the passengers + sheltering from rain any cargo.

As you are going to pay a quite hefty sum to get that pickup, you might want to pay out a little bit more and get more comfort.

If you would consider this, then the Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport are all possible choices.

Safety and crash tests, I am not really sure what are the results. Just keep in mind that a Pajero is about 2 TN, whereas a pickup weighs about 1 TN unloaded - hence much lighter.

I like the thought process. The trouble is that the rear seats in my CRV got used about 1% of the time whereas the cargo compartment got used about 7% of the time (comparativly). So I went the pickup truck route and started with a two wheel drive but decided to spend the extra on 4X4 (rarely used but invaluble when needed and available), not sure at all that I want to go back to the SUV route because of limitations on load carrying (when needed). Importantly, resalability of a pickup truck here is easy peasy and prices remain infalted.

Ho ho. Good luck trying to do that in Pattaya.

Buyer: do you have a model I can test drive?

Dealer: mai mi.

Buyer: do you have a model I can look at?

Dealer: mai mi.

Buyer: do you have the faintest idea what "business skills" are?

Dealer: mai mi.
