Death toll on 5th day of Songkran stands at 255

BANGKOK, 16 April 2013 (NNT) - The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has disclosed that the number of road casualties on the first five days of Songkran reaches 2, 290.

So far, 255 motorists have been killed and 2,439 injured. The number is higher than that of the same period last year.

The agency reported that on the fifth day alone, there have been 393 road accidents with 37 killed and 419 injured.

Chiang Mai has overtaken Nakorn Si Thammarat at seeing the highest number of accidents at 86. Prachuap Khiri Khan and Kanchaburi saw a record death toll of 11 each. The most accident-free provinces meanwhile include Chonburi, Trat, Nonthaburi and Phuket.

Nearly 40 percent of the accidents were caused by drunk driving, followed by speeding.

just got back from Phattalung, saw 2 accidents, one on the way down, car burnt out in the middle of the road(double lanes, divided road) facing the wrong way against a tree(in the middle of a village), and on the way back today 5 cars in a pile up, last one was a truck that shunted all the cars. We saw and were pulled up at one police check in Phattalung, so much for the police will be out on duty bit, did see a lot of tents on the sides of the roads with the boys drinking coffee ands sleeping though, not doing anything about the traffic. Did see a few drunks, you could tell by the fact they had to use both lanes to go straight, everyone just went around them until they started speeding then everyone just slowed down and let them go, well apart from those that wanted to race them of course.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department discloses that all of the road signs, slow down signs, sleeping policemen and other planned artifacts, that were due to be displayed from 6 days ago hence, were not in fact manufactured on time as a result of the funds for the aforementioned articles disappearing 3 months prior to order date. We apologise for subsequent deaths, and allay those accidents on pure revelling and Drunken driving during this time. We will, however, endeavour to reduce our personal graft next year, in order to reduce this year's figures - as we did last year.

Shouldn't be too many deaths when crawling back to BKK at 10 km/h, but will be leads of fender benders. Came back mid-day from Ratchaburi and the traffic was very light with no accidents seen.

The numbers pretty much doubled during Songkran last year than they would a normal week and would guess that will hold about true for this year too..

The whole process is a joke and gives lots of wiggle room for the government to make the best it can of the figures. There may be the 7 " dangerous days " but past governments, especially the real Thaksin's, would redefine what days were to be counted to reduce the figures. As I understand it, and I am more than willing to be corrected, a death is only counted if on the day of the accident so someone who succumbs to their injuries later isn't included. The official figures that will be released are very arbitrary

Exactly. No accidents my a**! I hear the ambulance every 2-3 hours from mid-morning until midnight.

Does that include people who die in hospital over the next month? That's something you rarely read about in the Govt released figures.

That is because the moving holiday hasn't hit Chonburi province yet ( Pattaya is 17,18 and 19 )

When is the government going to wake up and realize that this stupid idea of having everyone celebrate the holiday on a different day is what encourages all of these accidents

I used to live in a state where every town set it's own drinking hours which meant that when the bars closed in one town a 1 AM all the drinkers would get into their cars and go to the town that closed at 2 AM, and when they closed there, they would continue on to the town that served until 3 AM. Once the state government established the same hours for all bars in the state the death toll from drinking and driving dropped dramatically

If they are so arbitrary, surely it makes political sense to just lie and say the figures are much lower than last year because of successful police enforcement. The Yingluck supporters are trained to believe anything the government says, so it would be a win-win situation. Or is someone actually counting.....?
