I can't say I've ever heard a single Thai song I like, although to be fair I also don't like any western pop and not many popular western rock bands.

That being said, I don't believe that all Thai people like the ethnic country music, Thai pop/pop rock, or the K/J pop shit that you almost exclusively hear over here. There has to be some decent Thai hard rock/metal bands out there. I would love to find some, as well as some Thai people who have an appreciation for this kind of music, whether it's western bands or Thai bands playing that style of music. I've lived in Thailand for over a year, and to date I have heard a total of one Thai person listening to music I like, an artist in a temple in Chiang Rai who was listening to One by Metallica. I know there must be more out there, I guess I just don't know where to find them.

Anyway, if anyone could suggest any hard rock/metal/thrash metal Thai bands I would really love to find some. Some of my favorite bands are Metallica, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, A Perfect Circle, Incubus, System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, etc. If anyone knows of Thai bands playing music similar to this, I would greatly appreciate any recommendations.

I should make clear I have never liked pop music (no matter what its national origin) , and so much Thai music is sausage factory stuff, made to maximise the value of the fleeting career of a TV star (or vice versa to add another income stream via singers becoming TV soapie stars), I apply the "chun rak theu" test to the lyrics. Have always liked Carabao, Poo Khampee, that kind of songs-for-life style that uses many genres -there was some good Thai metal back in the early 90s. Marsha parlayed her music career into a respectable film and movie career. T-Bone had some good ska-reggae stuff. But Thai pop leaves me cold. There were even some good Thai funk bands back in the R&R days - I've heard covers better than the US originals. The best music in any culture lives in the sois, not the main roads. Not to say there are not good players in Thailand - technically very good. But Thai pop? I'd rather be deaf.

Are there any instrumentals by Thai artist?

Do some Isan country bands go in to long instrumental jams the way Santana, The Doobie Brothers and Chicago did back in the early 1970s?

I remember going to one of those Mai Thai outdoor concerts that go very late in to the night up near Khon Kaen a few years ago. There were thousands of people there and the stage was huge! Lot's of musicians, stage props, lights, fog machines, etc. It was a full on production. At times theband had went in to long instrumental jams with theatrics. I was loving it!

I referred to it as Thaiapolooza since I didn't know the name of it at the time. I'd like to hear more Thai music like this. So far I can't find any recordings. I just so happened to get lucky that night and see and hear an awesome performance.

Thank goodness there is one poster I can agree with. As much as I like Thai music I cannot abide a lot of the artists mentioned, apart from Siriporn Ampaipong. Carabao is not Thai country music and even the name is not Thai. I just cannot listen to Thai pop or anything that just apes western music too closely. Surapon was singing about 16 years of his marriage recently ended, he was shot dead not long after in 1968.

I like Isan country music such as artist like Carabao and Siriporn.

They use lots of cowbell.

for me, Suraphol Sombatcharoen (the King) is way cool.... i always gain kudos among the elders in Mrs G's village when i play, or sing aloud, "16yrs of our past"..... it's a great song.

I only refer to Carabao as 'country' because everyone else does. :)

My kind of country music is Jerry Reed, Johnny Paycheck, Roy Clark, Loretta Lynn and Hank Williams.

I don't think western influence was all bad, American country music had a big impact on Thai music in the 60's Sometimes called cowboy luktung or pleng ho, here is a more modern version by Mangpor Chonticha

Not much music in this but an interesting look at American country culture following in Thailand. There is a Cowboy convention every year I think and Thai Bluegrass seems quite popular. There used to be a member of a bluegrass band playing at chtuchak market at the weekends and selling albums of his band. Starts with Hank Williams and you can't get better than that.

Cham Cham Rams song had over 30 million hits last year before it was mysteriously pulled off YT, leaving lots of other postings of the same song. He is a very nice and genuine guy.His band is very good Gop the lead guitar is excellent. He's the sort that will take fans out for meals and give you lifts in his own car, invite you round to his house and call you up. The boy in the vid now works as a presenter for Grammy's fanTV

love music and love most of what Thailand has to offer with some exceptions.

i suppose i have been very lucky in some respects to have mixed with a diverse cross of the Thai population and have been exposed to different types of music on opposite sides of the spectrum that friends and family have intruduced to me a long the way.

always remember one of the first nights i spent in the country and was sat up late at night and caught the music show that plays the country style Issaan songs from the Grammy label and at that time their was a lady called Jintarla Poonlarb signed to them. shes with another label now, but is still my favorite. wub.png

like them all from Takatan Chorlada to Got Jakapan, Siriporn and love a good night out at one of the many Morlam clubs in BKK, eating drinking, dancing and having a good laugh and a sing a long

then there's the other side that i tend to lean towards through my own personal choice of music style. bands like Bodyslam, Silly Fools (been lucky enough to see them live) the splinter band and off shoot Hangman, Da Endorphine and Sek Loso.

anyway heres a good starter that mixes both styles.

off to find some Jintarla on youtube now ! biggrin.png
