BANGKOK, May 3 - Thailand's Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) on Thursday is finalising the first batch of 60 local terrorists and will seek the civil court's order on banning their financial transactions.

AMLO secretary-general Sihanart Prayoonrat reported progress on the matter as he called a meeting of concerned agencies including security bodies, law enforcement officials and financial institutions ahead of the visit of an inter-governmental body, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), on May 7-8.

Pol Col Sihanart said the task force will assess Thailand's actions to effectively deal with money laundering and financing of terrorism whether it follows international standard practices or not.

The visit came as Thailand expects its name to be removed from the FATF 'grey list' of countries at risk of money laundering by terrorist groups

The AMLO chief said the FATF will evaluate the enforcement of the country's anti-money laundering law. The assessment will be reported to the FATF June meeting where the removal of grey list countries will be considered.

After the country's concerned laws have been enforced, Col Sihanart said AMLO has announced a list of the United Nations' international terrorists and is now considering a list of Thai terrorists.

There are now 60 Thailand names of terrorists, most of them operating in far South, revealed Col Sihanart.

He said that AMLO is collecting evidence and will submit it to the Civil Court to issue a ban on financial transactions of the suspects.

Col Sihanart noted that the process will take time as this is a new issue for Thailand.

He added that 'terrorist' in this case means any person who acts as terrorist or financially supports the terrorism constantly. There are about 4,000 people with outstanding arrest warrants, but those who have been charged for terrorism in the political upheaval are not included on the AMLO list. (MCOT online news)

If they know that this money is being laundered for terrorist activities, why don't they just freeze the accounts and seize all cash and property of the 60 or so terrorists that he knows about. This Government could do with some more cash to straighten the budget out and get lesser of a loan.

Failure to comprehend AGAIN? the word "convicted" is not included in the OP, it refers to "suspects". One would hope convicted terrorists were incarcerated for a lengthy period of time and unable to launder money, whereas accused terrorists can be MPs.

Another lame attempt of selective order and future justice. UK seizes assets then asks the questions. Thailand issues a list after months of hearsay. Kinda suits the govt profile I guess.

Quite possibly because he has not yet been charged as such due to his absence, and the charges can't be laid until he is here to have them read to him. A strange quirk of Thai law.

By the time the govt finishes telegraphing its every move and finally does get around to freezing the accounts the accounts will be empty or already closed and replaced with accounts opened-up under different names.

They Democrat Government froze a load of accounts at the time of the troubles. Either they failed to find any proof, or did not really want to look to hard, either way, as far as I am aware there has never been anyone charged for funding it. I would of thought it would have relatively simple to track the money to be honest, as it was billions of baht a day according to Thai visa forum.

I was thinking the same thing. This country gets stranger each and every day.. They do everything backward. Can you imagine the FBI or Homeland Security, posting a list of the people they are going to scrutinize before picking them up? Not much in the way of common sense is it?
