In a special meeting of Parliament about recent unrest in the central Burma town of Meikhtila, lawmakers on Tuesday extended a state of emergency in the town and surrounding townships for 60 more days. Meikhtila was the site of severe anti-Muslim riots in late March which left at least 43 people dead and thousands displaced. Lawmakers said the situation in the town had stabilized but wanted to take precautions by extending the state of emergency, which includes nighttime curfews, in Meikhtila and the surrounding townships of Wundwin, Mahlaing and Tharzi.
