Canadian Man Weds Roi Et Woman, Offers Dowry Worth Bt100 Million

Obviously, this guy is an outlier. He could probably drop a few million just on a weekend away, so, 100mil was probably just a weeks work, at the most. His now wife has been spending the last 9 years getting educated and most probably a shining example of a person. She has probably been a great support for him over the years and the money that he gave to her parents would have been worth every satang even if the marriage doesn't last a few hours. I don't think we will hear anything more over it because, you would think, after 9 years they would have a pretty good idea of what they are both about together. Good luck to them.

It's amazing how people take a nice, positive story like this and crap all over it. 9 years they've been together, she's 40 and he's early 50s, he's helping her get an education and helping her family, and people here still talk about her like she's a bar girl and he's some dirty farang roaming the streets of Pattaya.

I'm incredibly thankful for all the great advice I've gotten on these forums, but people like that really irritate me. They have an image of farang and relationships crafted by their own reflection in the mirror.

I think it's the "excess" that many people have an issue with. Nothing wrong with helping the gf/wife's family on a continuous basis as most here do anyway, but 100 million? Seriously?

Boy oh boy.....If he only knew what he really has done.....I wonder if he would still do it...I vehemently agree with Cardholder...."Just say "NO!!!!" I almost got caught in this web of deceit and treachery but I managed to extricate myself with the help of a 78 year old Thai woman who understood what I was mixed up with and was good enough to advise me on what to do. This is about mutual respect of each other's culture and as such both parties must be 100% upfront and honest. I wish him and her well but he has definitely set a bad example for the farang community.

"Boy oh boy.....If he only knew what he really has done"

He's an executive at Chevron and owns a petroleum company, but he's being given advice by those who admit to need old women to "extricate" them from bad decisions they made or were about to make.

Once again the TV burnt-fingers sages are dispensing advice to those whose success has been based on ignoring advice from the also-rans.

Plenty of jokes come to mind, but if they've been together for 9 years, that's better than the average in Canada for marriages I suspect.

Good on her for working on her education.

Mind you I do support Sin Sot, I paid 5000 baht and 2 chickens for my wife, and she was worth every bit of it!

All good layers, I trust.

The family are a farming family, of which most lease land and do not own it - only a small group of people own the agricultural land in Thailand.

Actually, I have lived in the Northeast for many years, and almost everybody in this area owns their own land - not much land, perhaps 5-20 rai - but it's theirs.

Good for her! And good of him to stress education to a loved one

Crap, it's the other way around.

Are foreigners equal with their rights here or only pay-boys?

Can he buy land or get his wife as a nominee costing him another xxx, xxx, xxx.xx of B?

When I have the same rights as a person born in this country (able to live here, vote, buy land etc), then I'll consider upholding some of its "traditions".

100 million baht; wow, that is crazy. Especially for a 37 year old farmers daughter. Oh well up to him

Unless you know the couple concerned how can you make an informed opinion as to whether it's crazy or not?

Blimey! Where is the leak!

The plan is, that she divorces him after 2 years, takes him to the cleaners and then moves in with me!!!!!!!

You must know: I am an extremely sexy man.

Cheers.

Its time you posted your likeness! Are you as sexy as me? From what I've been told it is doubtful

Wow and my wife wanted nothing just me, good luck to them both i am sure he know's what he is doing and sounds like just a fraction of his wealth.

And fair play to him funding her education and encouraging her to study, most Thai girls would just sit back and count the cash and probably mees up along the way, he has waited over 9 years and i am sure he knows he can trust her now.

9 years and three kids was how long it took for the truth to come out about mine! Oh well .....

As it's a public forum, he can post any opinion of his own that he likes . . . whether you agree or not, he doesn't need to justify anything to you or to anyone else.

I wish them a lifetime of happiness. (But doesn't the guy know "real men don't buy girls"?) wink.png

What do they do with their money?

Buy boys?

Fast cars, expensive escorts, big houses, yachts, expensive restaurants, drugs . . . oh wait, that's just me . . . whistling.gif

Take care of me, take care of my folks. Pretty normal sort of everyday stuff.

Some of us can afford it. Some can't. Some refuse. It takes all types. Some people actually stay married!

I'm running out of time on that one . .

As Buddha would have said, these things are impermanent, and of no consequence. . . .

Where's Linus? Where's the blanket?

At 1,500 baht a barfine, with one a day, 100 million baht is equal to 182 years of daily bar-fining.

This one's costing him over 13,000 baht a shag, at once a day, considering she's actually shaggable for the next 20 years.

What is your statistic "most Thai girls" based on? Your own prejudiced observations of the gutter dwellers that surround you? TV has far too many hyper-generalising racists who don't even realise that's what they are... "I'm just stating the facts as I skew them, mate!", he said to the an on the next barstool... My Thai wife and those of most of my friends have all followed the education path, and were delighted to do so. Those who sat around and did nothing were the exception. I guess my friends have better judgment when it comes to women than the people you know.

Strange how everyone on this thread actually believes the story. For me, he doesn't "look" like a rich man. He looks a bit backward to me. And she is no princess.

But worst of all, while a lot of us are joking about the upping of the sin sot stakes, the fact does remain that a lot of guys, perhaps thinking of buying the ring, are going to be faced with huge demands for Quantitative Easing.

Yea, 100 million is a bit far out there (read extremely so...)

However you people who complain about sin sot or say you have never seen it although you lived there for countless of years, well, then I guess your world is quite small, or you simply only met extraordinary people.

For the average province people sin sot is standard. 100,000 for engagement and 300,000 for marriage is not uncommon for Thai couples as well. However, in many of the cases those 300,000 in one way or another goes back to the couple, in the form of investment for land, company, business or anything else that will bring them a great future together (as well as make a safer future for the parents).

Don't give me all that crap that only farangs pay sinsot and blablabla. I know Thai couples who struggle, together, to find money for their wedding. This is nothing uncommon, it's culture. Many Thais of the new generation don't necessary like or agree with this culture, but do it for their parents sake.

It's a question of saving your face/name for them, like it or not. That's how they grew up, and to change something that you have grown up with all your life isn't always that easy. And we all know Thais aren't generally as rebellious to their parents as many western nations kids seems to be.

There's also a huge gap between the generations, specially in the Bangkok word. A lot has happened the last 100 years.

If you want to live in Thailand then play the Thai game, just as you expect people to play the European/American/Aussie game when coming here.

That said, don't be stupid. There are still lots of dishonest people who will simply want to take advantage of you because of your fair skin which equals thick wallet. But those people aren't the majority.

Learn to see the difference between Scamming blood-sucking families and culture, then we wouldn't need all the disrespectful replies towards the whole Thai community...
